An Open Letter To The Brokenhearted

To someone out there, you are exactly everything they have ever dreamed of.

So, you're single again. Maybe as you're sitting here reading this, you're trying your hardest to keep it together in order to look as strong as you portray yourself to be. Maybe you're sitting alone in the darkness, trying to read this through your tears because everything was just so perfect a few days ago. Maybe you thought this was "the one." Maybe you saw it coming and were just bracing for impact. Maybe it came out of nowhere with no explanation. Or, maybe you're the one that ended it, but you still have feelings for this person. You're heartbroken, you're depressed, you're in shock and disbelief. You might feel like this inevitable darkness is never going to leave your mind.

Breathe.

It doesn't matter how strong you are, or what you've been through, or what your gender is, or how many times this has happened, or even if this was for the better. You are allowed to hurt, you are allowed to cry.

I don't care what anyone says; heartbreak is devastating. You may find yourself wondering if it's even worth trying again in the future, or if maybe you're just not meant to be with anyone at all. You may find yourself thinking about the fact that any relationship you find yourself in is either going to end in heartbreak for one or both of you or you're going to spend the rest of your lives together, and either scenario sounds paralyzing.

Stop torturing yourself.

It's overwhelming, I know. It's confusing and you feel betrayed and constantly find yourself looking through old text messages wondering how any of this could've happened. You've looked at his/her Facebook multiple times already to see if s/he has found someone else, and your thumb has been hovering over the "call" button for several minutes now. Stop. No matter what happened, no matter what promises were made or broken, no matter how miserable you feel right now, do not take them back . Not unless you've given yourselves time and they display the actions (not the words) that prove that things have improved. You are not a second choice. You are not a yo-yo. Stop with the on-again-off-again relationships unless you're attempting to drive yourself completely insane. Actions speak louder than words.

You are worth more than this. You are worth more than your anger, your heartbreak, and the darkness that seems to be consuming you. You are worth more than being anyone's choice - you are worth being a priority! Stop allowing yourself to be put on the back burner and start allowing yourself to be happy alone.

Love yourself.

To someone out there, you are exactly everything they have ever dreamed of. You are made for someone. You might not meet them tomorrow, or next week, or even a year from now, but they're there. Until then, stop looking for them. Start recreating yourself. Try something new that you've always wanted to try. Take up a new hobby or exercise. Have a movie night with friends or even just alone. Learn to love yourself again without the help of a significant other.

You are beautiful. You are strong. You can be a fighter and still break down from time to time. Moving on is terrifying, and so is starting over. You can do it. You can push through.

Everyone has felt this agonizing pain that you feel in your heart right now. You're okay, you'll be okay. No matter how deep the wound is, it will eventually heal, and you'll find yourself looking back and realizing why it never worked out in the first place.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
