An Open Letter to the New Tar Heels

UNC Will Change Your Life

An Open Letter to the New Tar Heels

If you had told me a year ago that I would be going to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I would have laughed in your face. I thought I would not get in. I thought it was too close to home. I thought it was not my “scene.” Well. . . I thought wrong.

UNC was barely on my radar when I looked at universities, and I never even wanted to apply. I did not take a tour of this school. I did not look into this school. Truth be told, I applied because my mom told me to and I knew it was a good in-state option. The day I opened up my decision letter I was ecstatic -- maybe that is because deep-down I knew I belonged here.

As an in-state student, UNC is an incredible deal that I simply could not pass up. Not only was it the best option in terms of tuition, but it was also the best option in terms of variety. UNC has a little bit of everything. I can go from having an in-depth political debate to discussing the true shade of Carolina Blue within minutes. I have met the most diverse group of people here, and I could not be any more thankful.

I have drunk that Carolina blue Kool-Aid and become a full on Tar Heel. I walk around campus wearing at least one article of clothing with “Carolina” written on it. I take basketball very, very seriously. I hate Dook with a fiery passion. Most importantly, I feel like part of a big Carolina family.

Senior year, I was so unsure of where I wanted to end up, but I am so glad I ended up at UNC. This school has challenged my thoughts, encouraged my individuality, and cared for my future. Everyday I wake up surrounded by my closest friends. I walk to class in the most beautiful town. I learn from the best professors. This school truly has everything. If you are hesitant about coming here, I encourage you to take a serious look at all UNC has to offer. There is a place for everyone here. There is a place for

you here. Welcome to the family future Tar Heels!

The Battle Between College And My Mental Health

College isn't easy, and I'm afraid I'm not going to make it at the rate my mental health is going.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?

For the average 20-something, life moves pretty fast. You’ve got classes, friends, relationships, jobs, family, and whatever else we overcommit ourselves with. I probably should have learned to say no to adding more to my schedule a long time ago, but instead here are 11 things that can be more helpful than coffee.

Resting b***h face. Defined as a person, usually a girl, who naturally looks mean when her face is expressionless, without meaning to. Many of you suffer from this "condition." You are commonly asked what's wrong, when nothing is. What people don't know is that is just your facial expression. Here are some things they wish you knew.
