An Open Letter To My Single Mom

I owe it all to you.

Mom,

This wasn’t the plan, I know. But if it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Being a single parent has to be one of the most difficult jobs on the planet because it is twice the work, twice the tears, twice the stress but also twice the hugs, twice the pride, twice the love. Moving to college and away from you, I have realized being raised by a single parent is one of the best things that ever happened in my life.

You taught me to never depend on someone else.

Independence is key. Thank you for that. Sometimes I wonder why I am so independent, but then I remember: It’s because of my mom.

You taught me that a heartbreak isn’t the end.

It’s actually just the beginning. Thank you from showing me that you can pick up the pieces and move on to bigger and better things. Things happen in life for a reason, and you have shown me that even the worst days lead to some of the best days of your life.

You taught me to never let a person walk on me.

You are the strongest person I know. I look up to you in so many ways, and I get my strength from you. Standing up for myself isn’t always easy, but I know you are the one person that will be standing behind me.

You taught me I have to make myself happy before I can make someone else happy.

Happiness works in weird ways. You have taught me happiness is found within ourselves, and the priceless things in life. It’s all about appreciating the little moments. Not everything great in life has a price tag.

You taught me that my dreams are most important.

I wouldn’t be able to conquer my dreams if it wasn’t for you. You push me to the best person I could possibly be, and it doesn’t matter where this life takes me, you will always be my biggest fan.

You showed me that everything becomes better with time.

We have faced some pretty tough days together. We have shed many tears, but if it wasn’t for those dark days, we wouldn’t be as close as we are now. You are my best friend, Mom.

You showed me what a real parent looks like.

One day, I hope to be an amazing mom just like you. Even through our toughest moments, you never walked away from me. You were still my biggest supporter when you didn’t know what tomorrow would bring. You have gone above and beyond. I am blessed to have you as my mom.

So here is the biggest “thank you.” I owe it all to you. This isn’t the life you dreamed of, I know, but you have to know that you are the reason why I grew up the way I did. You have taught me so much, and I couldn’t ask for a better mom. There isn’t a person on this Earth that could ever replace you, and I don’t know what I would do without you.

Love you.

Your Daughter.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
