An Open Letter To The (Recovering) Addict In My Life

I know that every day is a battle.

An Open Letter To The (Recovering) Addict In My Life

I know that you're sick and that every day is a struggle. I know that it's hard for you to go to parties where there are people drinking. I know that some days it would be so much easier for you to just give up and get lost in a drink, to let go of your problems and frustrations. I understand how difficult it is for you to live a sober life and that's why I think it's so important that I tell you what i'm about to write here.

Thank you.

Thank you for being strong. Thank you for remembering that a bottle of alcohol isn't worth destroying your life over. You've hit rock bottom and you still came back from it. You climbed your way up and built a life for yourself out of hard work and determination. I understand that things look more simple from the outside. If you're at a special occasion where people are drinking, you seem unfazed but I know that you're struggling internally with the urge to grab a drink and feel the sweet relief that alcohol has never failed to give you in the past. I understand that. I don't know how it feels but i know that it can't be easy. It's not without difficulty that you live the life that you live and for that I say thank you.

I also want you to know that I forgive you. I know that there are things that you've done that you aren't proud of, things that you'll always feel guilty for. I want you to know that I forgive you for any and all of those things. None of it was because of there person you are but actually because of your sickness. You have to shoulder so much guilt for the mistakes you've made but you need to understand that nobody blames you. It's OK. Everyone, and i very much do mean everyone, around you is immensely proud of you. You're a fighter and we know how hard you are fighting every single day. We're all proud of you and we forgive you.

You should also know how much of an inspiration that you are. Because of you I know that there is no obstacle that I can't over come. I've watched you over come your obstacles every day for the past 12 years. I've seen first hand the fire that a person needs to have inside of them in order to live the life that they want to live despite any hardships in their way. It amazes me when I stop to think about how determined you are.

It's important that you know these things. You are a person who is deserving of love, admiration, forgiveness, and so much more. I believe that it's your support system that helps you get through life one day at a time and what's a support system without, well, support? You need to be reminded of all of these things now and then so that you can continue on each day as determined as the last. I hope that you can read this and feel the truth in each word. I hope that you will always know that, if nothing else, I am thankful for the person that you fight to be every day.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
