An Open Letter To The Providence College Basketball Team

Dear Providence College Friars Men’s Basketball,

With around ten games left, I thought I should talk to you all. Growing up in Rhode Island, I have been a Providence Friars fan before I was any other sports fan. I remember going to my first game at the old Dunk and we beat Notre Dame. I have seen many great Friars pass through the organization. From Ryan Gomes to Donnie McGrath, to MarShon Brooks, and most recently Bryce Cotton, Ladontae Henton and Kadeem Batts.

For the past 20 years, there have been some special teams, such as the 2008-09 team that upset #1 Pitt or the 2013-14 who were Big East Champions, but I see something different in this year’s team. This year I see everyone performing to his highest potential. You guys started out unranked and now you are among the best teams in the country (above famed Duke and Kentucky). You upset #4 Villanova, #9 Butler and #11 Arizona. I have faith that you will go far this season and postseason.

To Coach Cooley, I have heard so much about you since my dad works on campus. I see you in the gym (when I go, which is rarely) pumping iron, and you are a celebrity on this campus, with your cook-offs and calling out students who are wearing a rival team’s apparel. But along with those things, the other hundreds in the student section and I see your compassion for your players and the determination to have your players put the right foot forward in a game, and we cannot thank you enough for being such an amazing coach.

Friars, every time we enter the Dunk, we expect a win. There have been some heartbreakers, but you have bounced back and given us a phenomenal season. It’s not over, so push through. Everyone has to step up and rise to the challenge when their number is called because we can’t only rely on the starting five.

Bench players have done exceptionally well in my opinion, and I want you to keep doing what you’re doing. Whoever steps on that court represents the team, and you guys made the team a giant in this conference that is the Big East. You can beat any team you come across, and we’ve seen that from the stands.

I’m proud to say that my school’s basketball team is amazing and I hope there are some surprises coming this March. But March is a long way away, so stay humble. Cooley, lead our team to something special, put our little school on the map, and I’ll make sure we are always chanting "Let’s go Friars" in the stands.

Sincerely,

A Fellow Friar

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

9 Reasons Why Friends Are Essential In College

College without friends is like peanut butter without jelly.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
