It is obvious that life isn’t always easy, and we are presented with numerous challenges each day. Whether it is what exam to study for next, what paper to cram in before the deadline or the endless thoughts about that one person who left you heartbroken, there are so many thoughts and decisions that could cause stress and sadness. Sometimes it is hard to imagine staying positive when there are so many things that can bring you down, but it is possible.

Focus on the positives.

I know it’s so easy to list all the things that went wrong today, but instead of focusing on the negatives, focus on the positives. You had a great conversation with that cute guy walking back from class, and you killed your workout at the gym! Once you start to list all the positive aspects of your day, you will realize your day actually wasn’t as bad as you thought.

Everything happens for a reason.

You deserve to be happy, and that is what you should be. Everything happens for a reason, and although it may not seem like it at the time, I promise you that everything works out the way it’s supposed to. Have a positive mindset and understand that when one door closes, another door opens, even if it is hidden at first. Instead of dwelling on the past, focus on the present and stay excited for the future.

Embrace those who love you.

Don’t forget to embrace and surround yourself with those who love and support you. Whether it’s your roommate who is your shoulder to cry on during your 2 a.m. breakdown or your best friend who makes you laugh until you cry, realize who is really there for you and embrace them. By surrounding yourself with those who lift you up, you will realize the amazing support system you have. This being said, please never take these wonderful people for granted. Embrace every laugh and do not take their company for granted. These people are placed in your life for a reason and are there to make you laugh when you don’t even want to smile.

It’s okay to focus on you.

Sometimes you have to create your own sunshine. By focusing on yourself, you will truly understand you and what is best for you. You will also learn how to be happy with yourself. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is not to rely on anyone else to make you happy. Focus on being happy with yourself first, then look for others who will just augment your happiness. Until you find that special someone, go ahead and get that mani-pedi, kick back and relax. Remember that at the end of the day, the only person you have to please is yourself.

Live life to the fullest.

Wake up each day with the mentality that “today will be a good day.” Take random adventures and take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities that will be presented to you. Life is a beautiful gift, so try your best not to take it for granted. Although things may get challenging at times, remember you will never be handed a challenge that you can’t overcome, and those challenges will only make you stronger.

With all that being said, please never forget you are an amazing individual who has so much to offer. Instead of letting life get the best of you, show the world how wonderful you are. Just remember to stay thankful, stay grateful and make the most of every day.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
