Dear Officer,
Many people would hesitate much too long to admit it, but you've probably got the hardest job in the entire world. And yet, day in and day out, you continue to do your job and prove well worthy of the shiny badge on your chest. Are you afraid? In this day and age, it is likely. But while many people run from fear, you choose to stand and stare it in the face. You'll fight your fear until it's pinned to the ground underneath your boots, and you'll carry on.
Now, even in the midst of all these terror attacks and shootings, you still continue your march, defining bravery and justice for those of us around you who could never understand. And as more violence begins to occur, you still do not hesitate to stand strong and protect those who are potential victims of outrage and violence, even though you are just as vulnerable yourself. I cannot imagine the courage it takes to show up to a highly-publicized event in full gear that seems almost like armor, with a heavy helmet on your head and a shield the size of your body strapped across your arm. Is the helmet just part of the uniform today, or will it mean the difference between life and death? Will the shield sit in front of you, merely leaning on your arm for support, or will it be forced against the pressure of thousands trying to break through it? I cannot imagine the courage it takes to pull a car off the road at three in the morning for going twenty over, and walk up to the unfamiliar window of the vehicle. What's behind it? A face, frustrated but understanding? A person drunk out of their mind, or high off of something with such a stench it makes you gag? A gun?
Dear Police Officer, I cannot imagine the courage it takes to put on your uniform every morning, to lace up your boots, pin on your badge, and kiss your family goodbye. I cannot imagine the courage it takes for you to drive around for hours on end between cars that could carry a driver much less safe than the others. I cannot imagine searching a dark building for a man who could sneak up right behind you at any moment. I cannot imagine the difficulties of your job, and I stand awe-filled with respect that you choose to repeat this act daily. You are so selfless and brave, and people don't realize just how much it takes to do what you do. So thank you, police officers, for being the most courageous people out there. Thank you for working through birthdays, anniversaries, Christmases, holidays, and storms. Thank you for making the worlds biggest sacrifices to ultimately save the life of someone you didn't know existed until you hear their name in a 911 call.
Thank you.
