Dear Personal Gender Pronouns,
I'd like to start off this letter by saying that I understand, but the truth is I don't. It's not a bad thing. I simply don't understand what it's like to be an individual who aspires to use you daily, but is too afraid to call out the social norm or the bigots or simply the people like me who don't understand. I don't really understand what it means to be gender fluid. But I want to. I want to know more about you. I want to understand.
You're doing a great job, you know. You give people the right to be described as they like, and allow people to feel cool, comfortable, and confident in their bodies as well as their gender, whether biological or not.
People ask a lot out of you. People call you out. People downright hate you out of ignorance or fear, or a lethal combination of the two.
Me? I'd like to learn. I'd like to learn how to ask people in a comfortable way what their PGP's are. I'd like to make this a cultural norm... Why, you may ask? Because I believe that everyone should have the right to be described, referred to, and addressed by others in a way that makes them feel normal, loved, and respected.
Thank you for existing, PGPs. You are worthy. You are everything that people need and more. You bring love and light and existence to those who thought those things were simply myths that only normally-gendered people could have. As if gender was something that could be normal. Wake up, society. Gender is changing and that's A-OK. People are using you, PGPs, to break the norm, to express themselves, and be the most authentic versions of themselves that they can be. And to that, I give you props.
I look forward to learning more about you, Personal Gender Pronouns.
Sincerely,
A passionate and curious student and woman activist
