An Open Letter To My Friends From High School
Brittany McGowan

Dear high school friends (aka the people I've known for as long as I can remember),

Hey! Hey. How are you guys? Gosh, graduation seems like it was so long ago. Happy Thanksgiving! I know I probably won't see you guys this break, but just know that I really hope you're doing well and college is allowing you to continue being the wonderful people I know you are.

It's been a while, and I miss you all. I legitimately hope I can see you all soon. I have so much to tell you, and I'm sure you have lots to share, too. I'll give you a hint: haunted room, television, writing, internship. And that's just the start of it all. I'd also say crazy professors but I'm sure we all have those.

We've gone our separate paths, and the transition was rough. It's difficult going from seeing you guys every single day for years to not seeing you at all, except for Snapchat. No matter what, you guys are still my friends. You've helped shaped me into who I am today, and for that I am thankful. I hope you transitioned well to college, your roommates treat you well, and you're having the time of your lives. Still, a part of me expects the world around to slow down and stop when I'm at college, even though I know all our lives continue on. It's a big step, but I'm finally getting used to it.

Since we have Snapchat streaks and not actual conversations, I am so curious what your new lives have been like. I really hope you're happy, that you've made some great friends. I hope your college is everything you dreamed it would be and more. I am so proud of each and every one of you for pursuing your dreams and making the most out of this time in your lives.

To my friends still in high school, I miss you guys too. To the seniors, now's the time. You'll be getting your college acceptances back soon if you haven't already. You'll all do great; I'm sure of it. Wherever you decide to go, just make sure that you can call that place home when you get there. Happiness is more important than reputation and grades. If you know you'll be happier at some tiny liberal arts school that no one's ever heard of instead of the Ivy League you got into, go to the tiny liberal arts school. In college, it's not necessarily where you go or what you know but what you will do there with your knowledge to have a successful future. I seriously wish you all the best.

I hope I'll get to see you all soon. Winter break is coming in just a few weeks for all of us, and we're going to have to do something. Good luck on your finals, though I'm sure you'll all do great. Just know that if you ever need someone to talk to, I'm still here for you guys.

Much love,

Your friend from high school.
