An Open Letter to NYC Tourists

You All Know Who I'm Talking About.

An Open Letter to NYC Tourists

Listen, I know New York is one of the best cities in the world. People from all over come to see the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and Central Park among other amazing sites. NYC is the melting pot of the United States. There are so many different cultures, languages, ethnicities, and religions in one place. It’s absolutely amazing. But here’s the thing New Yorkers welcome tourists…but not willingly. If you’re gonna be in the city..keep up with the city ways.

First, don’t stop in the middle of the sidewalk to take a picture or look at your map. I understand that the buildings are really pretty and if you don’t live there it’s a huge deal to document every moment of your trip BUT move to the side of the sidewalk so the rest of us can carry on with our day.

Walk a little faster PLEASE. New Yorkers are very fast paced when it comes to walking around the city. Everyone has somewhere to go at every second of everyday. There are constantly things going on so you need to MOVE. I get that you’re taking in the sights and enjoying your trip because you probably won’t be back for a while, but can you do it at a fast pace?

Do not stop and ask for directions. No one is going to give them to you so don’t waste your time. Use Google Maps and figure it out. I’m just trying to save you from the embarrassment you are going to endure if you ask for directions…everyone is just going to ignore you.

Times Square is literally all tourists. Since you don’t live here, go there. New Yorkers stay as far away as possible from TS solely because it’s all tourists. Here’s a piece of advice, the people dressed up as characters aren’t nice and they just want your money. They’ll harass you until they get your money. Don’t take a picture with them just ignore them and keep walking.

Don’t lean on the subway poles. If it’s your first time riding the subway it can be a little intimidating. It’s tough when it takes off at a jolt and stops suddenly, but don’t put your entire body weight on the poles. They are there for everyone to hold on to so we don’t fall over when there is suddenly train traffic. If you want to get yelled at by a grumpy New Yorker, then go ahead but I suggest you don’t.

Don’t dress like a tourist. Dressing like one will get you treated like one. No one likes tourists; especially in New York.

With all of this being said, ignore the stereotypes. New Yorkers tend to be pretty nice. Well, sometimes. Some of us. Okay, we’re a dime a dozen BUT if you don’t do any of the “touristy” things you probably won’t get yelled at by someone having a bad day. Enjoy your time in the city!

Sincerely,

A Permanent New Yorker That Once Was A Tourist

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
