I owe you everything and a lot more

Dear Mom and Dad,

As the times comes for me to leave you to go to college, I wanted to let you know important you are to me and how much I value you in my life. Nothing makes me realize how lucky I am to have you then going off to college when I won't be able to see you for such a long time and have to somehow manage to live on my own without you.

Thank you for having bountiful patience with me even when I made it so difficult. Thank you for educating me and instilling in me proper manners growing up. Thank you for always supporting me and believing in my aspirations. Thank you for encouraging me to do what's best for myself but also allowing me the room to make mistakes and grow from them. Thank you for always being there for me and through actions, making me aware that you always will be. Thank you for your endless, unconditional love that only a parent could have.

You do so much, make so many sacrifices, and I know that there are many times that you feel like all your hard work and love are taken for granted. Honestly, a lot of the time it is taken for granted, and I want to apologize for that. You deserve to know on a daily basis how much I appreciate you and what you do for me and, unfortunately, it doesn't really happen on a day to day basis. Despite that, I don't want you to think that I don't realize I should be doing it more because you deserve it to be given more. It's just that a lot of the times us children are too wrapped up in our own lives to realize that we're living those lives thanks to you. So for that, I'm sorry.

The truth is, I don't know where I would be without you. Without you pushing me to my full potential and encouraging me to never give up. You were my rocks, there when I always needed you. You're still my rocks. The first people I tell when anything exciting or new happens in my life. The ones I turn to when I have a problem I don't know how to fix on my own. Where would I be now if you weren't there to show me that it's okay to be uncertain in life, as long as you keep pushing through?

I'd like to say, I turned out an amazing person. Without a doubt, I know that all of that is thanks to you. I wouldn't even be half the person I am today if it weren't for you. You have shaped who I am and who I will end up becoming. Because of you, I can be confident in myself and my abilities going into this scary world. You raised me well, and now I'm prepared for whatever life throws at me. Because even if I can't handle it alone, I know I'll always have you to help me.

I love you both with every fiber of my being.

Thank you for everything, now and always,
Your grown-up child.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
