From New Englanders: An Open Letter To Mother Nature

Dear Mother Nature,

Listen, I appreciate the fact that I get to sit outside and type this letter to you, but it would be even better if I got to sit outside and do work every day now that its April. There’s been a lot of discussion about the weather patterns lately (or lack-there-of, I guess). My friends and I are all really confused at this point as to whether to expect warm and sunny days, or cold snowy ones. I’m not asking necessarily for a particular type of weather, but more-so a consistency of one type or another.

I mean, I’ll take the “April showers” every now and again, but quite honestly I’m done with the snow. Or you know, even if you’re going to keep the snow coming, at least go all out. Let it snow for a week, give me a snow day or two and then let’s be done with it. I want spring and nice weather, but I want it all at once; not these teases of spring days where its 70 and sunny, then back to 30 degrees with rain, hail or even snow the next day.

I want my heat on and hot coco. Or I want flowers to bloom and beach houses to be opened for the summer. I want my closet to be full of sweaters, pants, jackets, coats and boots. Or I want to look through my wardrobe to find dresses, skirts, shorts, tank tops and an array of flip flops. But I don’t want both.

It’s been pretty annoying waking up in the morning and putting on pants and a coat just to come back to my room after my first class and change into crop leggings and a t-shirt. I mean it’s great when the forecast says 66 and sunny, but it’s pretty aggravating when unpredicted showers and furious winds arrive, out of nowhere, later in the day while I’m on my way to lunch. I mean it’s cool to see all the seasons at once, but wow, I feel like I have to have four outfits prepared every day.

I appreciate fall, tolerate winter, but I love the warm and sunny days of spring and summer; and quite honestly this is torturous. Every time that nice day comes around and people start sitting out on the quad, I think: this is it, this is the day, the whether has finally broken. But damn, every time you’re back at it again with the snow! In fact, let’s take a look at this week’s forecast, shall we? Today was 64 degrees with scattered showers in the morning; Tomorrow will be 54 degrees and rainy; On Sunday and Monday we can expect 39 degrees and snow; and by next Sunday it’s back to 55 degrees and sunny.

I mean should I have kept my sweaters at school and left my shorts at home? Because, honestly, there’s not enough room in this little dorm to fit all the articles of clothing I need to survive your temperamental weather choices. Is spring coming soon? Or should I have my parents bring all my winter clothes back to school? It’s true that this time of year always has inconsistent weather, but I can’t recall it ever being so extreme. I mean there’s really no predictability here.

Maybe take some time figure things out and then make a decision because we’re all a little confused here. And if we’re being honest, I suggest you pick spring because snow is getting really old really fast.

xoxo,

New Englanders

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
