A Letter To My Mom
The Talon

Dear Mom,

You have played a big role in my life. You brought me into the world, you raised me, and you set an example for me, and showed me what a good mother, friend, and woman should be like. As Mother’s Day approaches, I just want to take the time to thank you for all the things you have done for me.

Thank you for loving me, no matter what I do.

I know I’m not perfect; nobody is. I have made mistakes in life. Sometimes I get angry and frustrated, I talk back or I don’t want to talk at all. Sometimes I even get emotional and you see it all. No matter what I do though you still love me through it all, no matter how much stress it may put on you sometimes.

Thank you for teaching me how to stand up for myself.

The world can be a pretty mean place sometimes, there is no denying that. There have been many times where I felt like people were mistreating me and taking advantage of me. You were always there to remind me that I was better than that and that I can’t let people get me down. I don’t know if I ever would have been able to stand up for myself and move on from the negative events that sometimes followed if it wasn’t for your encouragement.

Thank you for sacrificing so much for me.

You have sacrificed so much for me, and I want you to know that I appreciate all of it. I know I might not always show it or tell you how much I appreciate it all; it’s something that I need to work harder on. You need to know though that what you do for me is something that I notice every day. You work so hard all the time to make sure that I have everything that I need and want.

Thank you for letting me throw my problems on at you.

Being young is never easy for anyone. I lost count of how many times I had something ruin my day in high school or how many times I called you in college when I was feeling homesick or I was struggling to get through the day. You always answered the phone (or at least called me back if you didn’t answer). You never interrupted me when I talked and when I cried and got emotional you gave me comfort and advice.

Most of all, thank you for being my mom.

Mothers are an important part of any person’s life, but unfortunately there are a lot of people who do not have a great relationship with their own mother or many have even lost their mothers, and it breaks my heart to know that. I am so lucky and blessed to have you in my life, and I feel like sometimes I might not truly give you all the appreciation and thank yous that you really deserve. You love me unconditionally, you help me with my struggles, you work hard, and you are a beautiful and smart human being. I’m lucky to call you my mom on Mother’s Day and every other day of the year. Thank you for loving me, supporting me, and always being there for me. I know I will never take you for granted.

Love,

Your Daughter

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
