An Open Letter To Millenials Who 'Would Rather Just Not Vote At All'

This isn't the best option.

Dear millennials who “would rather just not vote at all,”

In light of recent events and news surrounding the campaign, I can no longer stay silent, as Donald Trump continues to prove that money and power are what matter in a presidential race. Despite repeatedly revealing how morally unfit for presidency he is, he continues to embody a sad lesson that you can do whatever you want, say whatever you want, “touch” wherever you want, and disrespect whomever you want and still be considered a respectable candidate as a viable leader of the United States of America.

Do we really want our future generations to see that we stood by and allowed a man like Donald Trump to make a mockery of our political system, humiliate us, and then ruin our country? Do we want history to reflect upon our generation as the one that decided that respect and basic human decency are not important traits in a leader?. How has it gotten to this point? Beyond the economy, beyond policy, what message are we sending to other countries, to future generations, to our children, to our children’s children?

Michelle Obama got it right this week, in her address at a Hillary Clinton campaign rally, this election is “not about politics, its about basic human decency.” And unfortunately folks, we have stood by and allowed it get to that point.

However, I digress, I am not talking to those that area voting for Hillary, or those who want to vote for Donald Trump. This presidential election energized so many millenials disenfranchised by the current broken political system. They saw Bernie Sanders as a refreshing change, and as hope. However, he did not win the Democratic nomination. Now, I continue to talk to millenials who don’t support either candidate. We now face a new problem; those same enthusiastic young voters, now don’t want to vote at all. If this is you, please read on.

Whether you don’t think it matters or whether “don’t’ agree with either candidate.” Your vote is STILL just as important this October, and in fact maybe more crucial than ever.

By throwing away your right to vote, you are putting your fate in the hands of others, although it is us who will be affected the most by the future! You are letting the radicalized voters decide your fate, OUR FATE. This presidential election season we have seen a large and radical portion of our voting population mobilize in support of Donald Trump. The more moderate voters either support Hillary, or as I mentioned, no one at all! By not voting you just gave up your freedom and risk allowing Trump as our President.

NOT VOTING, is not the best option. I continue to see everyone my age saying they would rather just not vote because they “just don’t like either candidate.” But I have news for you, if everyone thought like you, we may be reading Tweets from “President Trump” for the next 4 years, so please consider the implications of your actions and get out to vote!

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

108
Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
