An Open Letter To Marshfield

Dear 02050,

Last August, I was so ready to leave. To go to college, get out of Marshfield and live "on my own". I stopped at the seawall with my best friends the night before leaving and grabbed Gunther’s and Marylou’s on my way out of town the next morning. When I was finally unpacked, I hugged my parents and said, “See you at Thanksgiving!”

After rearranging a bit during the first couple weeks, I decided to hang up pictures to make me feel more at home. Every day I look at these pictures and smile because they feature some of my favorite memories with some of my favorite people in the place I will always call home.

At first, I thought it was the pictures that made me feel at home, but then I decided that they were merely a reminder. I decided home is with me no matter where I go and I think that’s the same for all of us Marshfield natives. Whether we’re in California or Spain or even just 45 minutes away in Easton, Massachusetts, the charm of “Marshvegas” goes with us. We brag about our beaches, rave about our restaurants and pride ourselves in our community.

I’m so thankful to have grown up in such a wonderful town. Honestly, the school system is fantastic. And to those in high school right now, you may disagree, but once you graduate I think you’ll see what I mean. I had some of the best teachers while in the Marshfield school system. And while they sometimes gave more work than I would have liked at that time, it truly prepared me for college. The variety of clubs and sports offered so many opportunities for students to do what they love or to try new things. The education, athletic and social aspects all aid in shaping students into such well rounded people.

Aside from school though, there’s so much more about this town that I love. The seawall never gets old, going to the Hop on early days was always a good idea, drives to Humarock are never out of the question, the Forum is always interesting, the fair (LOL), you’re guaranteed to see someone you know at the grocery store, “Go Rams” is always an appropriate response, it’s always a good time for Caesar salad pizzas on the beach, the third will always be more of a celebration than the fourth, occasional celebrity appearances are normal and the line for the Coffee Shack always seems to be worth the wait.

Marshfield, you have blessed me with best friends I will never lose, memories I’ll never forget and a place I’ll always have to come back to. It’s certainly important to leave and experience the world, but it’s also important to know that you’re always welcome back; and when you do come back, it will be like you never left. It’s no wonder why the 02050 is such a “Townie Town” with such beauty and charm it’s hard to want to leave. Marshfield, I cannot thank you enough for everything. I love you.

Love,

Current resident & future townie

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
