An Open Letter to My Low Maintenance Friends

We both understand that life gets in the way sometimes.

To Whom This May Concern,

Thank you. Thank you for constantly maintaining friendship near or far, long or short. I always know when we see one another after an extended period of time it's like picking up where we left off, with no hard feelings or resentment towards one another. Life can get crazy, both you and I know that.

Thank you. Thank you for always having my back in times of need and endlessly celebrating in times of joy, I know that when you act in either of these ways it's from the heart and never from a place of jealousy or spite. We may not connect with every detail anymore, but we always have a vague idea of what's going on and how everything is going in each others' lives. I will always remember the details you do tell me, like the boy you're talking to, the job you've decided to quit, the upcoming gig you have, or how you're liking your new job.

Thank you. Thank you for doing minute activities with me or running errands on busy days, you truly understand that it's not what we do, it's who we do it with, that makes it fun. There's no one else I'd like to return recycling with, run around my yard searching for the cats, grab mid-day lunch break food with, or go to the car wash. Listening to music in the car and dancing to the old songs we used to laugh at in the back of the McDonald's parking lot remind me that there's no friend quite like you.

Thank you. Thank you for always reaching out for time to spend together and never taking it to heart when plans end up falling through. Thank you for splitting the bill down the middle instead of needing to itemize everything, saving us both time and hassle. Thank you for always understanding, being supportive, and accepting the way the cookie crumbles every time it decides to crumble.

Thank you. Thank you for always having the best conversations. Talking about the world, about life, catching up on the tidbits of life that we've missed over the course of our separation from one another. Playing Pokemon GO, talking about the latest Instagram drama, laughing about old times and creating new moments to laugh about in the future. I want to hear about your latest interests, have you taken up reading more? Are you listening to a new band? Are you in a new band? So many questions.

Thank you. There's no friend quite like the one you can have a low maintenance relationship with. On days when I think we may have lost touch I realize that it's impossible. A week, a month, a year down the road, I know you'll be right by my side and we will have a relationship for a lifetime to come.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
