Dear Mr. Olbermann,
THON is a 46-hour, no sitting, no sleeping dance marathon. Since its start in 1977, THON has raised over $127 million dollars for the Four Diamonds Fund to help fight pediatric cancer. Although this is the true definition of THON, experiencing it is truly something that can’t be put into words. One community, fighting for one cause, looking to find one cure to pediatric cancer.
Your ignorance towards the Penn State community and students is absolutely mind-blowing. I may be biased because I am a student at Penn State, but I have many reasons to be proud to attend such an amazing university.
To begin with, the pride that all Penn State students show is indescribable. We are a community that does not back down when it comes to attacks made against our university, similar to the few that you have made. We love our sports, academics and philanthropies. At such a large school, with multiple branch campuses, Penn State pride can be found all over the country, and even the world. I am lucky to call myself a student of this fine institution because of the amazing things Penn State has to offer.
Naming Penn State “The World’s Worst in Sports” was truly appalling. When the NCAA took away scholarships and the opportunity of entering bowl games, I must say, as a student, this felt unfair. Why take away something from the students when the real issue was the inappropriate actions of a few faculty members?
Like a year 13-year-old bully, you took to Twitter to insult the students at Penn State. I’m sure you feel honored to have attended such a prestigious university as Cornell. And, really, that is a job well done. However, I do not need to receive an Ivy League education to become an educated citizen of the world. In fact, you act extremely uneducated to act and speak about a university in the manner that you do.
I could write an entire letter bashing you, but that would require me to stoop down to your level of immaturity and stupidity, something I wish to never do. We all could have done without your insincere apology, and here at Penn State, we could not be happier that ESPN has suspended you for your inconsiderate actions.
Sincerely,
Caroline Dooney, an extremely proud Penn State student
P.S. We Are, and forever will be, Penn State
