An Open Letter To The Girl Who Struggles To Love Herself

You are loved.

An Open Letter To The Girl Who Struggles To Love Herself

To the girl who struggles to get by day after day. To the girl who avoids mirrors that tell her she's not good enough, beautiful enough, or likable. To the girl who is constantly comparing herself to others in a destructive but almost automatic cycle.

I know it's hard to accept yourself wholeheartedly inside but I want you to know that you are loved. I want you to know that there is someone who thinks the world of you, who admires you, and who cares about you deeply.

It's hard when we live in a generation of likes, retweets, reposts, and comments being the determination of our value and beauty. To not give into the mindset of others determining your worth and acceptance by their standards that are an artificially modified thought of the definition of something being 'good' created by unrealistic expectations of perfection. It's hard.

To the girl who struggles to love herself, I am not here to wave my magic wand of words to completely expel the hurt, the pain, and just telling you to 'just love yourself". I am not that person.

But I am the person to tell you that you are understood. I understand what it feels like to not want to get out of bed because you wonder the point in that. You don't want to face people today because you feel too ashamed. To have that constant thought in your mind of what people may be saying about you, judging you, but ultimately being your own worst bully.

I am here to tell you that its okay, its okay to not be 100% in love with yourself, and if you did, you wouldn't be human. It's natural to have insecurities, have regrets and doubts. But its what you do with them that will determine your fate.

What I wish the most is that you could see the beauty that others see in you. Each person is created into a beautiful unique soul, given a heart to feel, and a mind to help the world.

I want you to know that:

You are special.

You bring something unique to this world, whether it's through your heart, your values, or your mind. You will always shine because you will always have a light inside of you.

You are smart.

You have more knowledge that you give yourself credit for. You can get those straight A's, you CAN made the Dean's list, because you know what? YOU ARE SMART, and don't let any comparisons or person tell you otherwise.

You are liked.

You might have those racing thoughts of others about you...BUT your friends love being around you and think the world of you! You have to remember to not assume other's thoughts. Plus, girl, who couldn't love you?!

You are caring.

You have a huge heart for others, and others see that! It's time for you to start to as well! You put others' needs before your own, and it comes from the goodness of your heart; never lose that quality. I promise, you'll move mountains.

You are worthy of happiness.

You deserve to be happy, because you're an amazing person with great qualities all around. You always put others' happiness in front of your own, but today that needs to change. It's important that others are happy, but it's important to make sure you are happy too. Never let anyone determine your happiness; only you at the end of the day have that control.

You are capable.

You can do anything you put your mind to because you have the determination and the heart it takes to make your dreams become a reality.

You are fun.

You're a blast!!! Don't let yourself think otherwise! Your personality is one in a million!

You are loved.

You are in the hearts of so many, and it's because they see the beauty that lives inside of you. For others, it's hard to not see the goodness and sincerity you radiate, and that's why they care about you so much. You're never alone; reach out to the people you are the closest to because they know the real you and the beauty you hold.

You are Beautiful.

You are fearlessly and wonderfully made. You are stunning, and every unqiue thing about you shines from the inside out!

You are, right now, at this moment, the best thing you could ever be in this world, and that is, you.

You are worthy of so much more than you think you are. I know every day is a constant battle to be confident and outgoing, but I want you to try, try everyday to work on that goal of self love. Because you know what?

You are everything listed above and more: you are amazing. Never doubt yourself. You are capable of moving mountains.

You are altogether beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you. Song of Solomon 4:7

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
