An Open Letter From A True Cubs Fan

2016 was our year, and our hopes are high for 2017.

I remember being really young, seeing my dad always watching the Cubs games and being constantly disappointed in them. As we all know, the Chicago Cubs were not even close to being a team that was worth watching, but for some reason, my dad always saw a glimmer of hope. As a grew older, I began to love the sport of baseball and I genuinely enjoyed watching the Cubs lose. Why? Because I am a true fan. We knew that the Cubs weren't good, we knew they'd probably lose, but us true fans never gave up hope that maybe one day, our Cubbies would rise up. 2016 was that year.

Being from a small town that is three hours away from St. Louis, I was surrounded by Cardinals fans. To be completely honest, I had no shame in being a Cubs fan. People would tell me how much the Cubs "suck" and how they are "completely useless by September." If I had a dollar for every time someone said that to me, I could probably pay my entire college tuition. I have one question for those people. What makes a true fan? Is it someone who, despite the multiple losses and so called "curse," still rooted for the Chicago Cubs? I wore my Cubs gear proudly and I mean it when I say I got at least three comments about the Cubs. Ninety-nine point nine percent of the time, those comments were not very nice. By high school, everyone knew that I had been a die hard Cubs fan for a long time and I was kinda known for it. I proudly wore the title of "Cubs Fan."

When 2015 rolled around, everyone started noticing the Chicago Cubs were making a comeback. The Cubs 2015 postseason games against the Cardinals and Giants were actually some of my favorite games to watch. Although the Cubs didn't make it as far as we would've liked, it lit a fire in the hearts of all true Chicago Cubs fans. That glimmer of hope that my dad has held on to his whole life was finally becoming a reality. We knew that 2016 was going to be our year.

Imagine the hearts of Chicago Cubs fans racing during that final game of the World Series against the Indians. I can honestly say that I would have given my left arm just to be able to hear that game being played from outside of the stadium. Not to mention what I'd do to actually be able to watch the game at the stadium. For anyone who watched the game and rooted for the Cubs, you know how much of an emotional roller coaster it was. Home-runs, errors, amazing catches, heart stopping moments... That game truly had it all. Nothing will ever compare to that last out made in the final game of the World Series and seeing the rush of excitement from the Cubs fans who had waited so very long for that day to finally come. Hearing thousands of fans singing the famous "Go, Cubs, Go" all together and celebrating a moment in history that won't be forgotten for a long, long time.

Cubs fans can now say that we are the 2016 World Series Champions and the curse has been lifted. Our fans are as true as ever and are ready for another amazing season from our favorite team. Written to true Chicago Cubs fans from a true, die hard Chicago Cubs fan. We can't wait to be "Completely Undefeated by September." April can't get here soon enough!

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
