An Open Letter to My Friends Around the World
Haylie Wood

Dear Friends Around the World,

Firstly, I would like to thank you for making my life so amazing. It is only because of you that I have been able to live life to the fullest and appreciate all the wonders the world has to offer me. Motorcycle tours across the country, cliff diving into freezing waters, snowboarding high up in the mountains, partying all day and all night at music festivals, teaching me phrases in other languages that I will never remember no matter how hard I try, and exploring new cities as more than just a tourist. None of these adventures would have been possible for me if it were not for you. I mean, who else can say that they were able to travel the world and not ever have to set foot inside a hostel or hotel?

Not only did you graciously provide housing and food for wandering little me, but you also opened up your worlds for me. You introduced me to your friends, families and cities that you get to call home, and showed me all the amazing things that you can only experience as a true citizen of a different place. You were always the perfect tour guides; adorned with excited smiles and optimistic outlooks for the upcoming day. I never felt like I was intruding. You made your place a home away from home, just for me.

I owe a lot of my success back home to you guys. If it were not for you, I would still be incredibly shy and unable to start conversations with complete strangers. If it were not for you, I would not have ventured far outside my small town where I grew up and explored the great world around us. If it were not for you, I would not be who I am today. And whenever life starts to get too hard or work becomes too stressful, I always imagine that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, which will allow me to gather up my money and belongings and head off to see my very best friends.

You are my favorite person on Earth. Each one of you! A phone call from you is the only thing I need to flip my day around. I have come to appreciate each and every one of my long-distance friends, because your companionship is what makes me happiest. I even brag about you to the people I meet, proudly exclaiming about the amazing people I know around the world that I get to call my friends.

Thank you for being there for me, even when you can’t really be there for me. Sometimes, the people who live closest to us cannot offer the same kind of support that someone from far away can give.

I hope to see you all very soon!

Lots of love,

Your Traveling Companion

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
