A Letter to My Mother | The Odyssey Online

Dear mom,

you were the first person to ever love me. You were the first person to talk to me about school. You were the first person to show me makeup. You were the first person to show me shoes. You were the first person to hold me after a breakup. You were the first person to understand me.

I want to thank you for all the things you have done for me. Thank you for being the mama bear that you are and always being on my side. I want to thank you for being the woman that you are; the strength that you have passed on to me.

Throughout my childhood years, you have taught me that it will be okay. I will survive. And that everything gets better. I want to thank you for all the love and support you have given me throughout my life so far.

The day I went to college was the day I broke your heart. I was not going to be going home to you every day after school. I was not going to be able to run to you or call you if something was wrong or out of my reach.

Thank you for being the mother that you are and thank you for giving me the wisdom you have given me.

Love,

Your Daughter

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?
