A letter to my fifty-year-old self,

First things first I hope your hair hasn’t turned gray just yet, and that you took well enough care of your skin. I hope you finally found someone who loves you unconditionally and treats you the best way possible. That you two go on a lot of adventures together, from the moment you met up until now. I hope he makes really good breakfast, and that it’s still your favorite meal of the day. I hope your kids have your hair and eyes and you’re able to give them the best life possible. I hope they went down the right paths and made the best choices. I hope you got to move to California if only for a little while, but I hope you found a way to make that your forever home.

Here’s to wishing you kept yourself in shape and didn’t give in and get a burger rather than a salad, unless it was In-N-Out burger, which we know to be the only exception. Hopefully you allowed yourself to go on all the adventures you pleased, and experience everything you wished to. I hope you dyed your hair teal blue at one point because you tried to talk yourself up to it every summer.

Hopefully you finally learned how to cook or you know of some really good take out places. I hope you finally got surgery on your foot, and that you were able to play tennis again. Also that you introduced your kids to sports that they can fall in love with too. I hope you got the dream job you wanted and that you finally realized what all the school and stress was for. I hope you never stopped loving going to concerts, and on shopping sprees. I hope you finally saw all your favorite bands perform live. I hope you still have fake nails and didn’t let anyone change your mindset that you’re simply more fabulous with great nails.

I hope you visit your family as much as possible, and that they are still close. I hope dad finally got his mustang, and mom made all the renovations on the house that she always talked about. I hope Netflix is still a thing and that you still allow yourself to take time out of your week to catch up on your favorite shows. I hope you met people along the way that inspired you to be a greater version of yourself. I hope you made the absolute most of your younger years and did some things you regret, and learned good lessons from the mistakes you made.

I hope you had good stories to tell your kids when they asked about your life. I hope you made your life mean something, and made the most out of your days. I hope life got easier along the way, as things started to fall into place and finally make sense. I hope you had the most fun, made the best memories, and laughed until you cried often. Finally, I hope that you are able to look back on your life and be fully satisfied with the way you lived it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
