Welcome weekend has passed and so has my last first week of college ever; I never thought that I would admit this but it is a very bittersweet feeling thinking about leaving the place that I’ve called home over the course of the last three and a half years to move onto the next chapter of my life, The real world adult chapter.
As I sit here and think about my last few years that I’ve spent at Ferris State University I can’t help but reminisce about the amazing opportunities that I’ve gained, the people that I’ve met and the places that this university has taken me to. But, I also can’t help but think about the opportunities that I’ve let pass by me without a second thought. I don’t like to openly admit that I sometimes wish I could be doing something else or with other people at certain moments and I’m sure other college students can admit to feeling that way at one point or another.
College is the time where we are supposed to cherish every moment whether they be sad, stressful or happy. But, that can be difficult when the semester starts to wear us down and the homework load becomes almost impossible to finish.
With just three months separating the real world and myself there are a few things that I wish that I would have done differently throughout the last few years and I’m going to share them with you so you take advantage of the remaining time that you all have left at your university.
Nothing lasts forever
When you’re in college it feels as though the time may never end but it does, and it ends quicker than you could ever imagine. Take advantage of the time that you have with the friends that you choose to surround yourself with and don’t wish your school year away. Our parents told us that “Your college years are the best time of your life,” and whether we want to agree with them or not, they are. So cherish every moment because one day we are going to want this back.
Don’t worry about what others think
We came to college to find ourselves and explore what life is like outside of our hometowns. You can’t do this when you are constantly worrying about what others are thinking or saying about you. I was always told that if they’re talking about you, you’re doing something right. So let others talk, stay true to yourself and what you believe in because you only need to follow what you think of yourself in order to be successful in this world.
Embrace failure
There are times when you’re not going to do as well as you thought on an assignment or exam. Trust me, I’ve been there and it’s not the end of the world. Take it as a lesson learned and try better next time.
You’re in the process of accomplishing something that not many people in the world have to ability to do. You’re away from home for four or more years, and you’re gaining a degree that will lead you to a future full of success. So if you take anything from this article it should be that you need to take advantage of your college years and cherish every moment. The last thing you want on your conscious is that you regret not taking the chances in college that you wish you would have.
