An Open Letter To My Elementary School Teachers

Everything I've accomplished in my academic and personal life was because of you.

An Open Letter To My Elementary School Teachers
University of Delaware - School of Education

While most kids dread going to school each fall, I was part of the small percentage that saw it as an opportunity to meet new people and learn things that peaked my interest. My enjoyment of those six school years directly correlated with the connection that I maintained with you, my teachers. Each year, you succeeded to draw me into learning. The reason I’m able to get what I can out of my college education is because of the work ethic that you, alongside my family, instilled in me from a young age.

At the beginning of every year, there was hesitance. My peers and I were getting used to you, and you were trying to feel out the attitude of my rambunctious little class. You made jokes that matched our comedic level, you set your expectations, and we went on from there. Maybe some kids were indifferent towards you, for whatever their reasons may be. I on the other hand took each of you as a challenge and was rewarded with the gift of your friendship. For every personality difference between us, I was able to adapt quickly, which has ultimately prepared me for dealing with people in the "real world" that I don't get along with.

Not only have you given me the basic building blocks for being a good learner, but also you have also laid the groundwork for so many other important aspects of my life. You taught me to embrace who I am, no matter who is around, as well as how to make the best out of bad situations.

Because of you, I have a more fully-developed view of how education betters my life and helps me be a better decision maker and adult. For these things, I am forever grateful.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
