An Open Letter To My Dad

An Open Letter To My Dad

Dear Dad,

Words can’t express how lucky we are to have you. Thank you for doing everything in your power to make sure that we are safe, happy, and have a healthy dose of Beatles music in our lives.

When I was little, I used to wait for you to come home at “regular time” as I called it. When you stopped working in the driver training department of the NYPD and switched over to the gang unit, “regular time” was a different time. I didn’t realize then how dangerous your job truly was but I do now, and I am amazed by the faith you still hold in this world, how giving you are despite all of the terrible things you have seen.

I want to thank you for your second job too. Growing up with a musician father has made my life so different from all of my other friends’ lives. Our house is full of instruments and my head is full of all different kinds of music. I love all of your little Facebook posts about different musicians and I love that you get to pursue your passion and that all of us get to see you do it. As much as I may complain about my brothers playing the drums all the time, I am so happy that you passed that along to them.

Mostly, I want to thank you for your number one job of being my dad. You have taught me so many things; how to hit a baseball, how to throw a football, pass a soccer ball, how to parallel park. Despite how reluctant I was to get my license, you never stopped supporting me and took me out driving for two years before I even took my test.

I want to thank you for always being there for all of us, and for making us laugh uncontrollably when you dance like one of the Peanuts characters, or when you do one of Mom’s old cheer routines.

Thank you to you and Mom for opening our home up to all of our friends and family.

Thank you for singing Brian, Sean, and I to sleep each night, even when Sean would say, “Daddy no!”

Thank you for being so patient with me as I learned to play the trumpet, and for not being disappointed in me when I decided to give it up.

Thank you for filming every Christmas morning, and for always being there with our gigantic ancient video camera for our cute moments as babies.

Basically, thank you for everything, because we would be lost without you.

Love always,

Bootsy

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
