An Open Letter To My Dad

No matter who you consider to be your dad, whether it is your dad, step-dad, grandpa, uncle, foster dad, whomever you call dad, make sure to thank them for all that they do.. While I could write to all the dads of the world, I want to write to my dad. Stay tuned until the end of this article to a challenge I want you, my readers, to take on. Before I get to that, I wanted to write this piece in honor of my dad.

Dad, thank you. Thank you for taking me into your arms when I was born and smiling at mom when you found out you had another daughter.

Thank you for not giving up on me as I learned to crawl, walk, and talk.

Thank you for being patient as I tried learning how to ride a bike.

Thank you for not letting me fall off my bike because mom would have had a heart attack.

Thank you for holding my hand when we walked through Disney World all these years.

Thank you for not buying me a children’s leash for our Disney World trips.

Thank you for the embarrassing photo of me crying in Disney World when I met the Queen of Hearts.

Thank you for the endless years of sitting at my soccer games.

Thank you for running away from the giant wasp nest near the field and making all of the parents on the sideline burst out into laughter.

Thank you for taking me on the fourth grade field trip to our state capitol and letting me have a Slurpee before my soccer game, even though I was sick the whole game from all of the sugar.

Thank you for making some pretty bomb homemade mac and cheese.

Thank you for dancing with me at every Daddy-Daughter Dance.

Thank you for dancing like a goof-ball every time I play “Low” by Flo Rida.

Thank you for you obsession with minions, especially Dave the minion.

Thank you for not getting mad when I Snapchat you doing something silly and sharing it with my friends.

Thank you for my first and second car.

Thank you for being horrible at texting because you are the only one I allow to “OK” me.

Thank you for dropping off my keys when I locked them in my car trunk at college.

Thank you for the surprise lunch trips to Lipuma’s.

Thank you for loving Boba on your Fro-Yo as much as I do.

Thank you for your love for cars.

Thank you for washing my car because you know I am terrified of car washes.

Thank you for the stomach flu story from Alaina’s senior high school spring break trip.

Thank you for being at my elementary, junior high, high school, and soon to be college graduation.

Thank you for always standing in the drive way when I leave home quoting “the flowers are going to die” or “back to school” from Billy Madison because you know I will not be home for a while.

Thank you for not knowing that every time I drive away I cry because it makes me sad knowing that my days of living at home are limited.

Thank you for taking care of mom, Alaina, and I.

Thank you for taking care of the babies and by babies I mean our three kitties, especially Little Man.

Thank you for making me cry when I was fourteen in the car to the song “Never Grow Up” by Taylor Swift because you told me it reminded you of me.

Thank you for helping me make decision that “Never Grow Up” will be our Daddy-Daughter dance song at my wedding someday.

Thank you for celebrating my triumphs and guiding me through my failures.

Thank you for teaching me how a man should treat a woman, with love and respect.

Thank you for teaching me how to walk through life with a smile on my face and the knowledge that I can do whatever I put my mind to.

Thank you for being my dad, my rock, my laughter, and my best friend.

Thank you for being the number one man in my life for the past 20 years.

I love you so much and even this article could not express how grateful I am to have such a humble, loving man as my role model.
