Dear Christians Still Supporting Trump,
Why?
You do realize that Jesus was a refugee, right? From the earliest moments of His life, He was on the run. His family fled to Egypt to keep Him alive while so many other were being slain. What if they had not been welcomed there? What would have happened if Egypt had fortified their borders and not allowed them entrance?
Furthermore, Jesus showed compassion to even the least accepted members of society. I must have missed the passage where He built a wall to separate Himself from the tax collectors, sinners, and prostitutes, because all I seem to remember are the parts in which He dined with them and treated them like actual human beings.
Maybe we have different versions of the Bible, though. Maybe yours has a footnote after that whole passage that says "Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you" (Mt. 7:12). Maybe there's an asterisk there that states, "Unless they are Muslim." However, there's a shocking lack of exceptions in the version I own.
Let's not forget the irony of the fact that Jesus came from the Middle East. Just because there are pictures of white Jesus hanging up everywhere, that won't change historical facts. Think about how, if He were alive today, He may be held up at the airport, or forced to return to His country. Maybe someone would have harassed him for acts of violence that He had absolutely nothing to do with.
I'm sure there are plenty of retorts you'd like to make at this point. However, before you do, allow me to show you some facts. What if I told you that the United States Council of Catholic Bishops, as well as the Pope himself have condemned Trump's executive order regarding refugees. Even if you are unwilling to listen to me, at least listen to what they have to say.
I am a practicing Catholic. I believe in God, and I try to live my life according to that belief. I, along with some very formidable voices, believe that we should not be closing the doors to our brothers and sisters in distress.
The world is in crisis, and we should be using our money to provide homes for the homeless, food for the hungry, healing for the sick, etc. Last I checked, "Build a wall between countries" was not one of the Works of Mercy.
If you believe that all are created equal, and that all are deserving of love and respect, it's time to step up and prove it. Put your money where your mouth is. Jesus's love was radical. He swam against the current and forced people to reevaluate their ways of life. It's time for us to do the same. We should be moving forward, not back.
Sincerely,
Your Fellow Christian
