To My Brother Who Isn't Really My Brother

An open letter to the one boy that never let me down.

Most envy the relationship Lucas Scott and Haley James share in the forever famous teen drama, One Tree Hill. I am the luckiest person alive because I can say I live that relationship everyday.

Dom, since the day you said to me, “We’re going to be friends” in second grade religious construction, I knew from then on I'd be stuck with you. Here are just a few of the infinite reasons as to why I'm thankful to have you in my life.

1. You're my shoulder to cry on.

From break-ups to lost family members, we have been there for each other through it all. It never matters how little or drastic the situation at hand may be, you're there ready with tissues and snickers ice cream.

2. You're better than any girl friend.

Thank you for knowing when to cut me off when I've had a little too much to drink, and still holding my hair back after I didn't listen.

3. You're my shotgun rider.

I can always count on you to be in my passenger seat, no questions asked. Mall, lunch or even the dentist, you come along, not because you feel obligated to, but because you genuinely want to keep me company.

4. You have a response time faster than an ambulance.

It could be two in the morning or three in the afternoon. If I called you and said I needed you for something, I know you’ll show up wherever I am seconds later.

5. You give me tough love.

If I need a reality check, I know there's no hesitation when it comes to you. You give me nothing but the facts. If there's a situation that does not require me to be babied over, you don't have a problem yelling at me and setting me straight.

6. You’re my personal comedian.

If I ever need a good laugh I know you’re the first one I can go to. It could be because I'm bummed about a bad grade or just want someone to laugh with, you're there.

7. We've adopted each other.

My family is your family. You talk to my family more than I do. You're in my family group chat, and you never let me forget it. We refer to one another as our adopted siblings and both our parents refer to us as their adopted children.

8. My home is your home.

I know your garage code, you know mine. There is no one else who walks into my house uninvited and just sits on the couch. The perfect example of this is when I came home to find you passed out in my bed just because you wanted to nap in my bed.

9. Your loyalty is incomparable.

I can confidently express that you are the only person who I can tell a secret to and know it's safe. You have my back in any argument I get into with another person whether I'm right or in the wrong.

10. We're each others number one fans.

In high school you came to as many of my field hockey games as you could and I was at every football game and wrestling match. Not because we asked each other, but because we wanted to be just as big of as a supports as our families. You even found a way to come to my college field hockey game, and I know I'll make it over to your school to watch you wrestle. This truly means a lot because I know how boring field hockey is to watch.

11. Distance means nothing.

This is the first year we have been apart and I think we can agree we're handling it fine. We've never been apart; since middle school we've had classes together and seen each other every weekend. You being at Sacred Heart and me being at URI hasn't stopped our friendship at all. I appreciate the daily FaceTime and phone calls, even if it doesn't always seem like it.

12. You put up with my attitude.

Sometimes I give you such an attitude and all I need to say about that is, thank you for not killing me yet even though you say you're going to.

13. We're related by love, not by blood.

Finally, just because we don't have the same blood never stopped us from loving each other like real brother and sister. Thank you Dominic, for not only being my best friend, but my brother. I love you, D.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
