An Open Letter To Both Of My Bigs

Yes, you read that right. I have two Bigs!

An Open Letter To Both Of My Bigs
Will Harmonay

When someone joins Greek life, they are joining a brotherhood or a sisterhood for life. You expect to make many great connections with your new brothers and sisters, all while having the time of your life and helping with projects that benefit your philanthropy and the community around you. You will plan events with your brothers and sisters and attend formals and date nights, where you won't want the night to end. And you will make memories and relationships that are going to last you a lifetime.

Out of all of these events and traditions that you can look forward to, there is still something that will always hold a higher meaning in my life than everything else I have done in my fraternity. That is the moment when I found out who my Big Brother was, and when I asked my amazing girl Big if she would take on this major role.

To my Big Brother, Matt. I've told you many times already how happy I am to be your Little Brother in our fraternity. I never grew up with a brother, so I never knew what it was like to actually have that experience with someone. I still remember the exact moment that it was revealed that you were my Big. I could not contain my excitement. But, while my excitement was overwhelming, I still was not sure of just how influential you would be in my life. You have given me so much more advice than I think you know. You have helped me when I didn't want to admit that I needed it, and you have always looked out for me while also looking out for the chapter throughout the year. I don't really say this enough to you, but thank you. Thank you for being the Big Brother that I both wanted, and needed in my life.

To my Big Sister, Nicole. I really could start anywhere with you. From the moment I met you my freshman year, I instantly connected with you. Just like Matt, you were always there for me when I needed you. When I was missing home and didn't know how to deal with it, you were there to help me through it. I still remember the drive down to school when I was moving in, knowing that as soon as I got to school I would be asking you to be my Big Sister. It wasn't on a large scale by any means, but I wanted it to be more personal. I know I can get on your nerves at times and vice-versa, but those are the times when I really remember why I asked you to be my Big. From our trips to Chipotle, to singing in your car to any song that comes on Pandora when we are stuck in traffic. Thank you for being the Big Sister in my life when my other three aren't down at school with me.

You are both extraordinary people. The things you both do on a daily basis never cease to amaze me. Your strength, courage, and strong will have all been reasons why I look up to the both of you. Whenever I have a bad day or can't seem to remember the good things, you both always know how to bring me back to who I am. For that, I will be forever grateful to you two. So again, I just want to say thanks. Not just for being a huge part of my life, but for letting me play a part in your life as well.

Everyone who is in college right now, or has ever been, knows the struggle of pulling in the strings at the last second. It seems impossible, and you have to do a LOT of things in order to assure your future for the next semester.

April Ludgate, historically, is a very annoyed person, and she doesn't hide it. Of all the times that I binged and re-binged "Parks and Rec," her attitude relates more and more to me.

The world is not always sunshine and rainbows, and you do not have to be, either.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.
