An Open Letter To My Big Brother And First Best Friend

Many siblings, especially brothers and sisters can have a difficult time getting along. I am one of the lucky ones that can say I have a very close relationship with my brother. Although we get on each others nerves sometimes, I know he will always be there for me through thick and thin.

To my big brother,

Thank you for the years of tough and brotherly love.

There's nobody else in this world who can pick on me and constantly throw sarcasm my way while keeping my best interest at heart. In doing so, you helped me grow thicker skin, develop a sense of humor and learn to stand up for myself. Although it may not seem like it sometimes, I appreciate you helping me become a tougher and more assertive individual in preparation for whatever life throws at me.

Thank you for the endless support.

Whether I wanted to pursue my dream as a koala cuddler or an animal biologist at National Geographic, you've always had my back and helped me believe that I could do whatever I put my mind to. You never let me believe for one moment that I wasn't good enough for whatever my heart desires. You are also constantly there to remind me that little setbacks were not the end of the world, and that I always needed to keep my head up. Whenever the world gets me down, I know that I have my big brother to help me back up.

Thank you for being my personal protection.

I know that I've always griped about you being overprotective, but it's this protection that has saved me from a lot of pain and bad situations in life. I know I always have you looking out for me when I don't seem to be looking out for myself. You're the best bodyguard a girl could ask for, even if it can be annoying sometimes.

Thank you for being my listening ear.

Even the times you pretend to tune me out, you end up responding to whatever I had to say, and that's how I know you're always there to listen. I know no matter what, I can count on you to listen and give some of the best advice. I cherish each and every ranting and gossip session that you partake in, and admire you for being able to handle it for all of these years.

Thank you for being my best friend.

Throughout my life, you have been one of the few that I will always be able to count on no matter what. Through friends and boyfriends coming and going, you are always there when the rest of the world seems to be crashing down around me. Whether you're in the room across the hall at home, an hour away in another city or on the other side of the world, I know that you will always be there when I need you. Whether it be helping me discover new music and movies or even myself, you have had such a great impact on my life than I am so thankful for.

Forever & Always,

Your little sister

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
