Dear Mrs. DeVos,
You've created quite a stir, Mrs. DeVos. First off, I suppose I'm supposed to say congratulations on being confirmed as the United States Secretary of Education. Granted, we had to have Vice President Pence cast the tie-breaking vote, but a win is a win. Plus, you're a woman, so... yay for women in power?
Except there's a problem, Mrs. DeVos. While we are both women, the comparison stops there. I am a PROUD product of the American Public Education System. Not only that, but I am the daughter of two amazing public school teachers.
Up until a few days ago, I don't think you had ever even stepped foot in a public school.
Mrs. DeVos, there are a lot of things about public schools that I don't think you grasp. Public schools do not just get to do whatever they want. They go through accreditation processes to make sure they're doing their jobs and educating the minds of the future.
Public school teachers do not teach for the money they make. No one goes into education for the money; they go into it because they love the job. But it's not just that that's getting cut, Mrs. DeVos, but education budgets are getting cut daily. It's extremely difficult to teach 30 little kids how to read at the same time, but public school teachers have had to learn to do it, and they do it well.
Mrs. DeVos, I pray that you prove all of us doubters wrong and that you defend public education. If you do, you'll have plenty of support.
Sincerely,
A Product of Public Schools
