An Open Letter To My Best Friend

Because you're the reason I'm sane.

An Open Letter To My Best Friend

Where do I start? We’ve known each other since freshman year of college, and I still remember the day we met at freshman orientation. It seems so long ago, and looking back we were so young. I never knew how much you would come to mean to me, and how many memories we would share together. So much has changed since then, and looking back, most of my favorite college memories are with you.

Thank you for being there for me when I needed you the most. You’re always just a text away, and I know I can text you without any explanation and you’ll be at my apartment in seconds. No matter how busy you are at the moment, you make time for me when I need it. You comfort me when times get rough and listen to me rant about whatever is on my mind, even if you don’t agree with me. Thank you for pretending to agree with me even when you don’t, because most of the time you’re right anyways.

You’ve been there through the good times and the bad — through multiple boys, bad grades, and emotional breakdowns. Not very many people would put up with me like you do. Thank you for not judging me even when I’m at my worst. I know I can always call and talk to you about whatever is on my mind, because you patiently listen and give your wise advice.

Thank you for going to McDonald’s with me late at night when I desperately need a Big Mac. It’s really those little things that mean the most. The laughs we’ve shared, the tears we’ve cried — college wouldn’t be the same without you. What would I do without you to call on my long car rides? Or to text every second of every day? Even though I liked it better when your read receipts were on, I still need your daily input on my major daily life crises. This summer, I really don’t know what I would have done without you at the other end of the phone. The only reason I made it to five pm every day at my job is because of you. You’re a true life saver.

I know we will be best friends for life, and I’m so glad I have you to spend college with. I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else. You know me better than anyone else, and for that I am so thankful. Nothing beats our long talks and daily gossip. Years from now we will look back on our college days and laugh at the memories we’ve shared. The long nights at the library, our terrible jobs, the obnoxious business courses, and the shopping trips will forever be remembered. We’ve been through everything together, and looking back to the first day we met I never would have guessed it. The best things really do come when you least expect it. Thank you for being my best friend, my sister, my partner in crime. I love you so much, and I couldn’t do life without you.

Sincerely,

Your BFF

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
