An Open Letter To My Best Friend

When People Ask Me About You, I Can Hardly Wait To Tell Them Everything I Know.

An Open Letter To My Best Friend

Dear Best Friend,

It’s crazy to think that there was ever a time in my life when I didn’t know you. A time when you were just a stranger to me. A time when you weren’t my best friend.

It’s even crazier to realize how one person can make another feel so complete. I never thought a friendship like ours could exist, but I’m glad to know that it can.

Thank you for all the crazy adventures, late night food runs, and endless advice about boys.

Thank you for always being down to hang out, even if it is just to stay in and watch a movie.

Thank you for encouraging me to follow my dreams, no matter how big they are.

Thank you for always making me laugh, even when I'm too sad to think it's possible.

Thank you for always fighting for our friendship and never giving up on us.

But most of all, thank you for being you.

Not everyone gets the opportunity to find a best friend, and the ones that do don’t always get to keep them. I’ve been fortunate enough to have you as a constant reminder of what a true friend should look like. You’re more than I could have ever wished for, and at times, more than I think I deserve.

When I talk to people about you, I can’t help but smile. The joy that your friendship has had on my life is beyond words.

When I look back on all the crazy things we’ve done, it amazes me to think that times like those were even possible.

It was as if worry didn’t exist. It was as if we didn’t have a single care in the world. It was as if, just for a second, life was perfect.

Those were the moments worth living. Those are the moments I'll cherish forever.

So again, I can’t believe there was ever a time when I didn’t know you. I can’t believe that you were once a stranger to me. I can’t believe that just as easily as we became friends, we could of walked away from each other not knowing what we would end up missing out on.

To think that our friendship started with a simple compliment, and eventually lead to an hour long conversation over coffee, is astounding. Good thing we both love to talk, right?

The rest, like they say in the movies, is history.

We’ve come so far as friends that a life without you is one I don’t want to imagine.

It’s true when they say that one person can change everything.

Do you want to know how I know? Because you changed everything for me.

Thank you for being the best friend anyone could ask for. I don’t know what I did to deserve you, but I’m grateful and thank God everyday you came into my life.

Love always,

Your Best Friend.

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
