An Open Letter To Someone Who Belongs In A Big City

Big Dreamer,

You know there's somewhere you belong and you might be there now and you might not be, but either way you're determined to make it there. There's just something inside of you that knows the bright lights call you to them. The loud taxis and yelling homeless men mean the world to you and not knowing what's light or day because of the skyscrapers is everything.

If you're in a small town, it's killing you inside to be away from the city, because nowhere feels more like home than streets and avenues that smell like dirty feet. The ambition behind the move to the city is stronger than that of anything in the world. In New York, finding a dirty cab driver with his middle finger in the air is easier than finding a man in a suit, which can tell you a lot about it and why you want to be there. Going to a big city can be scary, because there is the possibility that you won't be successful and will have to go back to wherever you are from. But you know that you are going to do everything in your power to make it in the city that many don't.

Every time you visit the city it's not enough because you can never get enough of the city that you are born to live in. Being in the city can be like walking into a dream and when you're there you don't waste any time. You stay out until 2 A.M. and wake up at 6 A.M. to do it all over again, because you need as much time in your city as humanly possible. The bright lights on the street stay on all night until the next morning and so can you and that's why you love it. The police officers will tell you the perfect place to get a slice of pizza and they'll take a picture with you if you ask them nicely enough. You can get Chinese food at any time and eat an amazing bagel for dessert. Buying an apartment that costs more than what some people make in a lifetime sounds ridiculous but it's worth it just to spend a lifetime in the city. You'd rather live under a bridge in the city than in a huge house in the suburbs. Just the thought of living in the burbs is heartbreaking, because it's so far from where you belong.

You belong in a city that never sleeps and you probably won't, if you're smart. Go for any opportunities that will make you closer to your dreams and don't let anyone make you feel that you won't be successful. You will achieve your dreams and it won't matter what people say when you are in your city. Whether your city is New York, Los Angeles, or anywhere in between, just know you're going to make it.

We'll all get there sooner or later.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
