Whether your intention is that you care about me or maybe you think you know what’s best for me, I promise I can make my own decisions.
I attend Ohio University. Before I began my freshman year, I was told I wouldn’t last or would turn into some crazy partier and even that people couldn’t picture me here. Yes, I do know it's known for being a “party school.” But does the fact that we have the third-best block parties in America mean that my education is worth less than yours? Does the viral video of a man jumping off a porch to be caught by other students mean that my degree is not valid? No. Not in the slightest. But, what that does mean is that us bobcats can balance work and play. I love the social aspect of my school and it’s something that sets us apart from the rest. Although if all you know is the fact that we host the best fest season around, I’m sorry. You’re really missing out. What you know is only the surface.
My major is Communication Studies. Asking questions is perfectly fine, but do not interrogate me. Doubtfully commenting, “What do you plan on doing with that?” will only entice me to talk your ear off. I am more than happy to openly share my goals and aspirations, but only if you’re actually interested. Choosing a major was so difficult for me, being indecisive is a huge flaw of mine. I recently applied and got accepted to Ohio University’s Scripps College of Communication Studies, that was a huge moment for me!
You wish you were a Coms major so it would be easier? It’s not my fault you’re unhappy with your choices and that doesn’t mean you can bash mine. Toss the stereotype in the trash. College students share a lot of the same struggles, but unique struggles as well. Don’t judge mine, I’m not judging yours.
Listen, I am self motivated to perform my best and that will never change. I balance 16 credit hours, a part-time job, a social life, and two organizations. I didn’t get an A because it was a blow-off class, I got lucky or my teacher had a crush on me.
I chose a school that makes me feel the happiest I’ve ever been. I chose a major that aligns with my talents and values. If you really care about my decisions, trust me. I have grown more in these past few months than I have in my lifetime. If you really care about my decisions, trust me and support me rather than doubt me and question me. I have this beautiful thing called a brain and I have been using it for 19 years. If I could ask one thing from who ever is reading this, stop doubting me and start being proud of me.
