An Open Letter To Anyone Who Thinks Education Majors Have It Easy

First of all, shout out to all of you Education Majors out there.
When people hate on you and claim that you “have it easy” just thank them because you are about to have it easier when you cut their negativity out of your life. Don’t let their hate affect you because you are going to make a difference in many of your student’s lives one day and that will override any judgment that you received on your way to your profession.

If you think that majoring in education is easy, then why don’t you also pursue it?
You are constantly reminding us that we have the easy life, so why don’t you just join the party? Why don’t you come with us to observe the schools in our community and see problems that you cannot do anything about. Stay up late to finish homework that you did not have time for, not because you were socializing with friends but because you were busy observing classes and volunteering. I am not saying that your major is easier or more difficult to achieve, but if you are constantly talking about how you could graduate with a 4.0 in our major, just remember you can always change your degree to Education.

So, here’s the thing: Education is not like math or science where there is a formula that can possibly guide you to the correct answer.
You have to learn about a variety of students that you might have in the future and the personal obstacles that can affect them as an individual. In addition, you have to find ways to guide them to a positive, social and academic life. Don’t forget that every student is different and what works for one student does not always work for the other one.

Can we also please acknowledge how Secondary Education Majors need to double major (at least at my school).
So you know that girl that you are hating on for majoring in Education? Well, she is also majoring in Chemistry. This is why you should think twice before you tell her that people who major in Education are not as intelligent and then ask her for help on your Chemistry homework.

Let's also recall how we all remember our favorite teacher, and if you don’t, well I am sorry.
Now let's think about why you always remember this teacher as your favorite teacher. Is it because he/she went the extra mile to make sure you were doing fine in all of your classes? Is it because he/she genuinely cared for you? Is it because he/she actually put in effort in teaching and made sure you learned something in their class? Now how do you think this teacher would feel if you went up to them and told them that their life is so easy?

I am not saying that you have to become an Education major after reading this article, but you should always consider that every academic area has its own challenges and you should really stop telling Education majors that they are not as smart as other majors. Just remember that they are the educators who are possibly going to be teaching your children in the future.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
