An Open Letter To The American People

I am ashamed of the people in my nation because who someone voted for or who the president is does not, and should not, define you.

Dear American People,

It's been nine days since Donald Trump was elected as President and America seems to be in chaos. There has been seemingly wide-spread panic over what President Trump will do now that he is in office. Some of you are afraid for your rights, you life, and your freedom and your fears are understandable. However, for the people who are rioting, attacking other citizens, and walking out from schools, and acting like the world is ending- please stop.

The fact is we do not know what Trump will do as president. It has only been nine days for heaven's sake! I understand he promised to do a lot of things during his campaign, but let's be real people- presidents after presidents have promised many things during their campaigns, but how many of them actually got passed? Do you really think the people in House of Representatives or the Senate will allow him to do half of the things he promised, such as getting rid of the rights of the LGBTQ community? When they are members of the community, have family members of the community, and advocate for the LGBTQ community, why would they vote to terminate their rights? And I know they can be outvoted, but there is no guarantee they will or that other members of Congress will stand by them? Sorry to burst your bubble, but not everyone in Congress is against gays or their rights. And this is true of all his other promises towards Syrian Refugees, Muslims, Hispanics, and African Americans (which I still can't find any promises he made about them).

And it is true I cannot guarantee that they won't vote against your rights, but if you are that unsure and that afraid, then do something other than protesting or calling wolf and causing panic when the wolf does not exist. I am not just talking about the LGBTQ community; I am talking about every single person in America. You want the change, then act! Send letters, talk to members of your community, form organizations, research the people in your district who are in office and vote when it comes to your district and state. You cannot complain about problems when you let them happen or cause them.

And for the people who are forming riots, burning flags, attacking other fellow citizens (and I am speaking to both Trump supporters and Hillary supporters) of our nation in the name of Hillary, Trump, religion, ideology, or whatever flag you claim to be under, YOU are the problem. You are the ones who decided complaining- no, not even complaining, whining- that you did not get your way or for the unjust, fear, or violence you face can apparently only be solved by having riots, threatening people who do not stand with you, attacking those people, destroying property, walking out of school, not showing up to work, or burning the flag of your nation will solve the problem. Tell me how- does it solve the problem?

What does it say to those who have the power to change things, to enact laws, and to pass the laws about you, the people who are causing panic and mayhem in our nation. How does any of that further your cause? Why would they support your cause when you just showed them the only way you know how to solve anything is through violence and pettiness? How about you show them that your cause is something to stand by and something to support by changing how you react when things do not go your way.

I am ashamed of the people of my nation because who someone voted for or who the president is does not, and should not, define you. Learn some respect for your fellow citizens, for different ideologies, cultures, politics, religions, and just differences. Differences should be celebrated, tried to be understood, respected, and just accepted. It does not mean you have to support it or believe in it, but honor someone else's differences. Because those who doing these actions under someone else's name or an ideology, you are just showing that the only change that needs to happen is within because as much as you try to preach how you respect others and their differences your actions do not show it. And that's true for the whole nation.

If we want to change the things in the world we need to start changing ourselves. And it needs to happen now.

8 Things I Realized After My First Semester In College

Actually, Kylie Jenner, 2018 is the year of realizing things.

The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?

6 Unrealistic Expectations Society Has For Young Adults

Don't let the thesaurus-inspired vocabularies in our résumés fool you. We're actually just big kids.

Well over four feet tall and 100 pounds in weight, many of us "young adults" of the world still consider ourselves children. Big, working, college-attending, beer-drinking children. We may live on our own, know how to cook noodles, and occasionally use a planner, but don't be fooled; the youthful tendencies that reside within us still make their way into our daily lives. From choosing to stay up until 3:00 a.m. playing video games on a school night to going out in 30 degree weather without a coat, we still make decisions that our parents and grandparents would shake their heads at in disappointment. So why are we expected to know exactly how to be a wise, professional, sensible adult? It's not that we're irresponsible (for the most part, anyway). It's that we are young, inexperienced, and still have the sought-after, enthusiastic mentality that we can do and be whatever we want, which has not yet been tarnished by the reality of the world. These are just a few of the unrealistic expectations that society has for young adults.
