Dear America,

So, these past couple of months have been like a roller coaster and you may be feeling like your people, and the world, are losing their faith in you. You try so hard to give us a home from sea to shiny sea, but no matter where you look, there’s always people killing each other. I want to go ahead and apologize to you for making you feel like we have all lost our hope in you. Despite what we’ve been through this past year, we are still living in the land of freedom and dreams.

This year’s election left us divided and aching. There’s been protests going around the nation since election day, and this has made the world see us as a broken nation. We may not be at our best, but we are most certainly not at our worst. America, you are still the land of freedom and dreams. You are still the land where we can freely express our feelings without fear of suppression. You are still the land that gives us hope of a better tomorrow. We are not a broken nation; we are just going through a rough time as a nation, but this too shall pass.

This rough time will pass and we will once again be united. Your people will realize that we need to love one another to stop all the hate. Don’t worry America, I promise you that this is not your end. Your land is full of survivors and that is what we will do. We will survive and overcome all the hate and division that we are currently facing.

We still have every day too look forward to, because despite what pessimistic news media will tell you, we can still make the most of our everyday freedoms. Each day, you give us plenty of opportunities to make our lives better. You are the prime example of how hard work and dedication can take a person a long way. Thanks to you, America, we have the chance to go from years of unemployment to high level management in under two years.

America, you are our home and regardless of where our ancestors came from or the challenges we face today, we will keep pushing forward until we can unite as a nation. You are the land that gives millions of people the opportunity to embrace a new culture and a new way of lie. We may all come from different backgrounds, but at the end of the day, our love for you will unite us. Your people are not perfect, but deep down we all respect one another and want to end the discord that has been tearing you apart for the past decade.

One day, we will stand united to bring you back to the great country you were, and one day we will fix the problems we have faced with race and gender for decades. It may not be today, or even within the next century, but we make this promise to you America, we will one day stand united under your flag and bring you back to be the forefront of the world.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
