An Open Letter To America After The 2016 Election

Dear all citizens of the United States of America,

First and foremost, I think I should start this article by saying congratulations to President Elect Trump on winning the Presidency as well as congratulate all other candidates across the nation that were elected to office.

Now, on to some of the issues at hand.

First, in the days since the election I have become so disheartened at citizens of this country. I always grew up thinking that this was the greatest nation on earth and the things I have been seeing do not prove that in anyway. The things I have been seeing happening in protest of the election have been so sad. I agree that people have a right to protest things that they are passionate about but when it comes to burning the American Flag that just crosses a line that is too much for me. That is something that hurts me on a level that I cannot even put into words. I have had so many family members and friends in the military that have so proudly served the country they loved to protect the freedoms we are accustomed to today. These people have given so much if not all for this country and protecting that flag and everything it means, it makes me think how does someone even think to burn a symbol of freedom such as the American Flag. I could never even think of it because all I can think about are the men and women who have fought so hard for that flag and this country.

Also, I will go ahead and announce it to the world, yes I, Kim Harvel, voted in this 2016 Presidential Election for Mr. Donald Trump. With that being said I was not the biggest supporter of him in the months prior to the election but when it came down to him and Hilary Clinton I did not even give it a second thought about who I was going to vote for. Some would like to sum up my vote by saying just because I am a republican I voted for him simply because of the party, but it was more than just that. There were other issues at hand that helped me make this decision. One of which being some of the policy that could be implemented with him in office and how that could really help the country in so many positive ways. Also, another huge part of my thinking was the possibility of the amount of Supreme Court Justices that this President could appoint. Always remember a President is for 4-8 years but a Justice is for a lifetime.

Another, issue I am having with the days following the election is the way people are reacting. Liberals are out saying how terrified they are to live in this country because of things Mr. Trump had said in the election season but why be terrified of the future? Of things that probably won't ever happen? Of things that it takes more than the President to complete? Do they not understand that it takes Congress to approve the legislation before it will ever end up on the Presidents desk?

Other people want to judge him on prior actions and that to me is just wrong. It is wrong to judge people in general, I have always been taught that we are not the judges and if it truly is wrong they will have to answer for it on judgement day. But really people, lets all think for a second, don't we all have skeletons in our closest that we would love to keep there forever? I know most people do so those things that people love to throw up all the time about President-Elect Trump are probably the same way but he doesn't get that luxury because he has stepped into the public light to try and make this country stay great. I just know that I have always been taught to love others and not to judge and I think that is something so simple that more people should follow.

So if I can leave you all with anything I would like to leave you with this. He doesn't take office until Jan. 20 so give him a chance. We won't know how well he is at his newest job until he has had a chance at it. Don't be so quick to judge not only him but also other people in general. Don't be so harsh on people based on their beliefs because the beauty of this country is that everyone can believe what they want, how they want and can express those beliefs the way they want. Be more thankful for all the rights and privileges that we all can take for granted sometimes. Love others and have less hate in your heart. Please please please respect this country, everyone who has fought for it and every symbol for these great United States of America.

Also, I want to leave you with a quote from one of my favorite movies, Bambi, "If you can't say something nice, then don't say nothing at all". -Thumper (This can apply to both sides of this debate)

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.
