An Open Letter To My FFA Advisor

I want to start off by saying thank you, because I know I don’t say it enough. Between tired remarks on early morning trips and constant complaints when I feel like the work I’m doing is going nowhere, I really am appreciative of everything you’ve ever done for me, and I wanted to let you know.

I would not be the person I am today without you, and I’m not sure if you’re aware of it, but you changed my life. When I decided to join FFA, I knew I was diving right into something new, and I had my concerns. You never let those concerns overpower my passion, my curiosity, or my excitement. You guided me through the process of uncovering everything there is to discover in this wonderful organization, and you’re still helping me to find even more. You are responsible for the passion I embody today. I have always been extremely proud of the personal growth I have completed since I became an FFA member, but looking back on everything, I wouldn’t have grown at all without you. You taught me how to spread my wings and expand my abilities to points I never realized I could reach, but at the same time, you kept my feet grounded and helped me maintain a sense of reality. You never let me stay down when I was feeling low, but you always reminded me to stay humble when I was feeling proud. You taught me that the things that scare me are going to be the most valuable and the most fun. You taught me that success starts with the decision to try, and when I feel like giving up, I should only try harder. Perhaps one of the most important lessons you ever taught me was to simply be myself. Whether it be to tame my jitters before a speech, an interview, or just advice to help me prepare a portfolio or application, you repetitively told me to be myself. I took your word, of course, as I always have, but as I grow older, I realize that I wouldn’t be myself without all that you have taught me. Thank you for teaching me in the classroom, on the road, and in learning who I am. Thank you, because I know I’ll be carrying these lessons with me a for a long time.

Through the years, you became even more than just my advisor, you also became one of my closest friends. Whenever I needed help or advice, you were one of the first people I ran to because you had already taught me so much, I was convinced you knew everything. Thank you for putting your best foot forward and for always knowing what to say and when to say it.

Thank you for being a teacher, a leader, a best friend, a sidekick, and a crazy tour guide when needed, your continuous support to me, the rest of my team, and everyone you meet will be something I hold onto long after my days as an FFA member are over. I hope that one day, I can be half the person you are, and I hope someone looks up to me in the way that I look up to you. So once again, thank you for everything.

Sincerely,

The FFA member you left a lasting imprint on

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
