An Open Letter About Change

As I start a new year, I can't help but look back and think about how much I've grown. These are just some thoughts, from me to you.

An Open Letter About Change
Stephanie Quiroz

You aren’t the same person you were a year ago. So many things have happened since then. You’ve forgotten some people, met some new people and even lost some people. You left the country in search of something you aren’t sure you’ve found yet. You’ve roamed the mountains aimlessly in search of an adventure. You’ve hurt. You’ve laughed. You’ve loved. You’ve also held back. You’ve been stopped by fear. Your comfort zone has always been your refuge. You didn’t go after what you wanted and you cared too much. You didn’t use your voice and you managed to somehow convince yourself that it wasn’t your time to take risks because you weren’t ready.

Maybe, in another year or two, you would be -- at least that’s what you always told yourself. But you forget that time is fleeting, and another year went by and there you were, still stuck in your comfort zone, dreaming about the chances you should have taken. One by one, you watched them slip away further and further down your timeline, only to meet again when it was perfect timing. Here you are, 365 days later, a different version of who you once were, yet somehow you’re still that same person.

But this year is different. You have started getting restless when things have become too sedentary. You look for ways to leave. You long for change. You have started taking chances. You used to hate change. It meant you weren’t in control anymore and having control over certain things made you feel comfortable. Now you have learned to embrace it, because with it comes sought-after dreams that have been put on hold for far too long. You finally understand that it’s not all going to be easy. You know that the only way through starts with you. You have to be the one to take the leap, even when you’re afraid of heights.

Day by day, we are met with an accumulation of change that is constantly turning us into the person we hope to become one day. That’s the beauty of living and experiencing. Year after year, we set goals for ourselves that promise to bring change and a new start. Those same goals are often forgotten about or set asidefor another time.Don’t be afraid to take chances anymore. Don’t hold back. It’ll never be the right time or the right place. But don’t let the notion of change hold you back. We can’t expect to be the same person forever. It has already stopped you so many times before from going after what you want the most. Don’t let it leave you with 'what if’s. Go find that spark and run wild.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
