Ahh high school, the good ole days. Many great memories, hobbies and friendships derived from this time in my life. It was a time filled with great exploration, understanding and realization.

Dear Me,

The problems of today will not matter tomorrow. Enjoy the little time that you have to not worry about consistent responsibilities. This is the time to do what appeals to you as you head towards your future.

Decide colleges based on you and what appeals to you rather than conforming to the average possibilities of those around you.

Value your close friends and family and take nothing for granted. before you know it, either you or your closest friends could be on the other side of the country. These people do so much for you and they’ll always be there for you. Therefore, the time you have is so sacred and should be cherished everyday.

Popularity doesn’t exist in the real world, unless you’re a celebrity of course. In college, no one will care how many friends you had or how many boys you dated. What really matters is who you are as an actual person and not who you have become because of your accomplishments. College is a time of understanding; not only of yourself, but your relationships as well. Through this realization, comes stronger bonds as you work to eliminate the unnecessary connections that would otherwise hold you back from fulfilling your desires. It is very important to spend time with those who truly matter to you and who you genuinely enjoy being around.

Don't stress about the minor things. In a year, the fear of repeating an outfit will be irrelevant, that dance you didn’t get asked to will be forgotten and that one test you did bad on will not end your life. Trust me, there is far worse that could happen.

What you were in high school is not an accurate representation of who you are and what you can accomplish. Often times it becomes easy for us to fall into the cadence of the crowd around us. Keeping up with trends and being in the “know” only works towards diminishing your individuality. Offer your own spin on things and be open to all possibilities as you never know what may strike you in a positive manner.

Enjoy high school for what it is, but don’t let it completely alter your sanity, values and true state of individiality.

Sincerely,

Grown-Up me

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
