This summer I took two online classes and both were completely different. My first online class was in June, and it was an "Approaches to Film" class. My second online class I just completed this past week. I have been taking the class since the beginning of July, and it was an "Intro to Women's/Gender/Sexuality Studies" class. Before these classes, I had never taken an online college course before, so I didn't know how well it was going to go. I was quite nervous about it, but I did it. I completed both classes, and here are my end of the process thoughts.
1. Online classes are good for the summer to get General Education courses done.
I now have more general education credits done, and it did not take too much stress or effort. It is extra nice too if it is a double dip in the different general education goals.
2. Just like any class, what you put into the class is what you will get out of it.
I noticed taking an online class I was able to complete the tasks with no problem, but the issue was I was not receiving as much information rather than being in an actual class setting. It takes a little extra focus when working online.
3. The syllabus is intimidating.
Since the class is only a month long, the syllabus can be intimidating. At least that is what I thought, but by the end of the course I realized it isn't all the bad.
4. Time.
Online classes are always different. My first class required a lot of film watching, so I had to make sure to set a side time for the film, but for my second class it was much easier to do the tasks in between other things I was doing throughout the day. Also, the due dates can be different. One class I only had a quiz and discussion posts due by the weekend while the other I had due dates throughout the week.
5. One or two, never three.
My suggestion, depending on how much free time you have in the summer, is to take one or two online classes, but make sure they are in different months. Focus on one at a time or you will get stressed out quickly. I had some days where one was challenging enough with fitting in work and being with family and friends.
6. Group projects are still a thing.
I thought online class meant just doing my own work online. I had to accomplish two online group projects in one class. At the beginning, I was thinking "how in the world am I suppose to do this?" Well, it was a challenge of video chatting and using Google docs, but it is not impossible. Both of my projects did well, and the people were very nice.
I do not regret taking two online classes this summer. I had doubts, but I pushed through and now have less credits to take in the future. Yay! Online classes aren't for everyone, but I do suggest trying it before deciding it is not for you! Now after taking six credits this summer, I finally have two weeks of nothing before the fall semester begins again at Winona State.
What will I do?
