To The Ones I Owe Everything To

I love you more than all the stars in the sky.

Me

This time of year makes everyone seem a bit more sentimental, we just sat around a table to give thanks, we are about to sip on some hot cocoa and sing along to our favorite Christmas carols, and soon after that we will be ringing in a new year. I have done a lot with the last twelve months and I wanted to end it off with something that actually meant something more than my academics, career, and personal goals.

When I sat down at my laptop to write this I knew exactly what I wanted to say but I couldn’t find the perfect words. At last, this is my attempt even though I know it won't do them justice. To my biggest inspirations, my support system, the people who have made me into the person I am today, my parents. Thank you.

I know everyone says that their parents are the best, and they probably are right but I’m not sure they quite match up to the two of you. From giving my sister and I the best childhood, to supporting us in our adulthood. I would not be the person I am today without having the two of you by my side every step of the way.

It might seem obvious that a parent would do anything for their children but somehow the two of you always seem to be giving a little extra. You may not know it but I base the decisions I make off of how proud it would make the two of you. From learning how to dress for an interview from you mom, or knowing how to take care of a plant from you dad. It may seem silly to be thankful for what can be considered such mundane tasks but to me, they are small representations of my parents.

To my version of Lorelai Gilmore, the person I share a sense of humor with, the world's best “rockler”, and ultimately the world's most giving woman, I love you bunches. I will forever be thankful for you teaching me how to cook, braid my hair (even though you taught me like a lefty) and reminding me that I don’t have to always be tough, that it’s okay to cry after a hard day. The days we spend binge watching our favorite tv shows while eating potstickers will always be something I look forward to.

To the guy who gave me his feet, nose, and endless encouragement, as cheesy as it sounds, you will forever be the first man I loved. You taught me to always do what makes me happy, whether it be flipping burgers or running an emperor. As a kid I looked forward to the days you would pick me up from school so I could show you my spelling test. Now I look forward to coming home to tell you about everything I’m working on. Having you tell me you're proud of me is what keeps me working so hard. You will always be the person I love standing outside in the rain with while splashing our feet in the forming puddles. I love you more than all the stars in the sky.

I am so lucky to have both of you as parents. I know that I can always come running to you no matter what it is about. Thank you for giving me a life full of opportunities and supporting me in every decision I make, even when it’s me change my major for the ninth time. I love the crazy family you gave to me and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
