One Year Later

When you hit a home run off of the curveballs life throws you.

It's funny how things happen and we honestly feel like we'll never get passed it. Life throws us curve balls and we lose our way. We wonder when things will start getting better but we can't see a light at the end of a very long, obstacle-filled tunnel. Then a year passes and you look back on the situation with a smile on your face. You made it. You conquered your worst fears and are on the other side. A year can seem like an eternity when you spent it searching for yourself again.

One year won't heal all wounds, but it sure does a good job of changing your outlook on them. You look back on what happened to you and remind yourself of how impossibly strong you were, and still are, for having gone through it. You think of every person who helped you get to where you are and you fill with gratitude.

One year of fighting to find balance in your life has made you bold. You have done things you never thought you could do. You put yourself on the top of your own list and finally started treating yourself well. You did whatever you could to piece yourself back together, and turns out you did a better job than you ever gave yourself credit for.

One year is so much more than 365 days. It's confidence. It's courage. It's perspective. The things that were so important to you one year ago seem so small now. The people who hurt you are gone. The ones who were always there for you are closer to your heart than ever. You found God and you pursued His love and guidance further than you ever have before. Life got tough, but you got tougher.

One year can show you the things that truly matter. When everything you once knew falls apart, you can see the things left standing are the ones that are meant to be there. You are able to rebuild your world around only the aspects you want there. You build them stronger. You love deeper and laugh louder knowing that those who surround you are the ones who truly love and care for you. Clarity overtakes your soul and you wonder how you survived this far without it.

When the world crashes down around you, don't get discouraged. God sends His strongest soldiers to His toughest battles. You're capable of so much more than you think. You are strong and you are worth it. One year of heartache, prayer, and fighting like heck to regain your control may be exactly what you need.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
