One Word We All Should Describe Ourselves Is…

We’ve all been asked that personality question during group ice- breakers or personality quizzes, “how would you describe yourself in one word?” If you find it difficult to find that one word, I’ll give you the answer (even though the answer is clearly in the subtitle). Yeah, it’s unique.

I may not know you, but I know that each and every one of you, no matter who you are or where you come from, you are unique. You’re different. Each individual owns their own character based on the experiences they’ve endured, the personality traits they’ve developed, and their personal interests. Just look at our world collectively. Our planet consists of all different cultures and new ideas that thrive in order to create even more new and unique ideas and opinions.

We’re all talented. Every human being has multiple gifts that they have to share with others and to further develop who they are as their own person. Talents from playing an instrument, singing, dancing, drawing, and writing to having a way with persuading others and having cleverness, to having sharp hand-eye coordination and speed when comes to sports. Also, whoever has a strong hand for coding, construction, engineering, mathematics, or any related craft, your gifts are much appreciated. I for one do not have a strong left- brain. It’s true many people have the same gifts as you and there may be some tension between you and your competitors, but just remember that you are your own creation and you have the ability to appreciate and support peoples’ talents. And look at that, another gift.

We’re all creative. Especially this day in age, creativity is everywhere and it all starts and continues with each and every one of us. All of our imaginations hold the keys to doors that haven’t been opened yet. If all our minds thought alike, the world have no color and our lives be quite dull. If we didn’t have creative minds, music and movies would not trigger such emotions and just never be the same and musical and staged theatre would not exist. If inventors and space engineers didn’t think differently in order to come up with new ways to improve our lives and see our solar system, museums and different exhibits would be ignored. And overall, no one would pay attention to anyone; we’d be so boring.

Our cultures are so diverse because each of us who contribute to each culture is so diverse. If there would be one question to ask about who we are as people, it would be, “why would anyone want to be the same as someone else and close- minded when there are so many dimensions of the world of art and the creative means of life to experience and explore?”

You’ve most likely have seen the Instagram post or the meme that says to be your own version of yourself because everyone else is taken. I’d say that is very good advice. You’re a special edition. There is no one like you. Plus, it takes a lot of energy to be someone you’re not because you’re unique. That’s how I’d describe you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
