For coming out a little over 2 weeks ago, 13 Reasons Why has instantly become a topic of discussion among all people who have watched the show or read the book. Based on the book by Jay Asher, this Netflix original television series describes the dark secrets that the late Hannah Baker has left behind for her classmates who have wronged her over time. The struggle with mental health issues is prominent, and although it is hard to watch at times, there is a necessity to discuss these topics.
People all over social media have been talking about how we should all be nice to others around us and how little things can really add up. One of the main points of the show is the power of words. Words are just words until you string them together in a way that hits home with people, and for better or for worse, they can have a powerful impact. We are taught as young kids to always be kind to others, say please and thanks, look both ways, etc. What we don't think about is that it's usually not getting hit by a car that does the most damage; words can crush you in a way you may have never known before. We are taught all our lives to be nice; however, being nice is not the same not being mean. Going through your day seeing a blur of faces is one way to live life, but is it the right way? Never stopping and taking the time to get to know the people around you is one way of ignoring the truth behind being kind to others. Holding that door for someone or just smiling and saying hi can be the game changer in someone else's day, and really, what harm could come to you for breaking out of your comfort zone a little? Hannah Baker says in the show, "We all need it, human contact." I had never even thought of anything so deep as I did when she said that. On your roughest days, sometimes all you need is your mom or dad's hug and an "it'll be okay", and suddenly everything seems to be just that much better. There are numerous instances in which the smallest bit of attention can make your day, make you feel wanted, and make you feel like you have a purpose. Life is short, life is hard, and life is memorable, but it is important to keep in mind it is that way for everyone. Be kind to others because you don't know what battles, demons, or obstacles they are facing. Be someone you would be proud to meet, or someone you would be proud to have as a friend. Be someone people come to for help and advice, and most importantly, be kind to everyone. I didn't need a spinoff television show to remind me of that, but I was reminded just how crucial every moment of human interaction is. Live your life, but be courteous to others and the journey they are on as well.
