Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Monsignor James McDonald, a great friend of mine and an awesome man to talk about becoming catholic. And as I stated in a previous video, I am becoming catholic! Monsignor McDonald has been the parish priest at the Church of St. Aidan in Williston Park, New York since 2009. We sat down in his office and talked for a while. I was so blessed and thankful I had the opportunity to interview him as well. Here is the interview:
Charles: "What advice would you give to a young man considering the priesthood?"
Monsignor McDonald: " I would encourage him to pray, become involved with his parish and teach religious classes".
Charles: "What is the most rewarding part of being a parish pastor?"
"Hearing confessions, baptizing children, many different things all very satisfying."
Charles:When did you first discover your calling into the priesthood?
Monsignor McDonald: "6 years of age"
Charles: "What other churches have you served in before St. Aidan's?"
"St. Matthew's , Our Lady of Perpetrual Help, St. John's, rector of, Seminary of Immaculate confession in Huntington."
Charles: What makes someone a "good catholic"?
Monsignor McDonald: "Three things, relationship with god , relationship to the church, and charity."
Charles: "What is your favorite book and movie about the catholic faith?"
Monsignor McDonald: "The Cardinal", Henry Morton Robinson 1950-51 novel."
" QuoVadis, Movie"
Charles: "What is the most memorable experience you have had as a parish pastor?"
Monsignor McDonald: "So many things. Crash of the flight 800, building the church in Center Moriches, seeing men being ordained as priests."
Charles: "Is there anyone you look up to for daily inspiration and motivation?"
Monsignor McDonald "My mother and father."
This was such an incredible experience for me. It is always great to see Monsignor, we appreciate each other's company and always have long conversations about faith and life in the church and real world. He is such an incredible inspiration for any catholic person. He is a great mentor and role model. Thank you for reading, god bless!
