North Carolina's 9th Congressional District is in the middle of a voter fraud investigation between Republican Mark Harris and Democrat Dan McCready. The Republican unseated the last holder of the seat, Robert Pittenger, in the primary all the way back in May. Several media outlets marked this seat as one of the most competitive in the country. Harris currently leads McCready by 905 votes and was the apparent winner in the race. Unfortunately for Harris, the North Carolina State Board of Elections and Ethics Reform found irregularities with absentee ballots, refusing to certify the results of the race. These irregularities are now the subject of a criminal investigation.
The board looking into the voter fraud claims dissolved in December, leaving no board for a month to find a solution or come to a conclusion on what will happen in this race. A new board was projected to be created at the end of January. Harris agreed that of these allegations were true, and could be proved with evidence, that there would be a new election held. The GOP party chair for North Carolina, also agreed that if the claims were proven fact, that a new election would be held. Not only are their voter fraud claims, but a local newspaper in Bladen County reported that early voting results were released before Election Day.
The Democratic Governor, Roy Cooper, attempted to fill an interim board, but he was overridden by Republicans in the State Legislature. Subsequently, the House Majority Leader, Steny Hoyer, a Democrat from New York, stated that Harris would not be seated in the 116th Congress until the investigation was over, and the board certified him the winner. If there is a new election, primaries would have to be conducted again according to North Carolina law.
Almost 100 days after the election and the 9th Congressional District still does not have a Representative. A board has been dissolved, allegations and accusations have been thrown, and the Majority Leader even threw himself in the mix. This race is still "too close to call" and it doesn't seem like it will be called within the next week.
