One and two
Two and four
Little girl alone
Wants more
Then dolls to play with
Everyday
So she asks
Her folks
For a friend
Who’ll stay
Nine months
A century
Who really knows
Time for a four year-old
Moves so slow
But the day it happens
She’ll never forget
A bundle of blankets
The soft warm breath
Of a new life
A forever friend
In her arms
His eyes so bright
Like the stars
She wished on
Every night
He is hers
And she is his
The other kids know
Not to mess with them
Dream and run
And play and skip
To Neverland
A trip they
Won’t miss
The other kids
Just don’t get
That being different
Really is the best
So the little girl
Makes a game
Distracting the boy
From the mean kids’
Words and vain
Remarks about his glasses
Thick and black
Where they see
A joke
She sees Superman’s disguise
Not something to attack
“Blending in is boring”
She assures him
Every morning
One and two
Two and four
Little girl and boy
No more
He is tall
And she feels
Small
Oftentimes like
She’s going to fall
The dolls were gone
Long ago
But she’s found something
Better
Than a first snow
Or any other dreams of childhood delight:
The dream she wished on
Every night
A brother to be
Her forever best friend
And a brother-sister bond
The two know
Will never end.
